Par for the Course: Area courses prepare for upcoming high school season

Golfers have the opportunity to see many of the high-school golfers on their home courses as coaches hold summer conditioning prior to the start of the prep golf season in August.

Golfers that play on local courses should be sure to inquire about the high school golf schedule and make room for the opportunity to watch this season’s talented golfers.

Area courses hosting high school teams include:

   • Sunny Hill Golf Course: Home course for Rootstown and Field

   • Paradise Lake Golf Course: Home course for Mogadore and Waterloo

   • Windmill Lakes: Home course for Ravenna

   • Raccoon Hill: Home course for Kent Roosevelt and Streetsboro

   • Fairways at Twin Lakes: Home course for Kent Roosevelt girls and Streetsboro girls

   • Sugar Bush Golf Couse: Home couse to Garfield

   • Olde Dutch Mill: Home course for Southeast

 

OHIO OPEN

The 105th Pyramid Treating Ohio Open concluded three days of competition at Firestone Country Club in Akron as Daniel Wetterich of Cincinnati moving up the leaderboard from seventh place following the second round to the championship.

Wetterich won by a three-stroke margin over two amateurs, Logan Sutto of Monclova and Nick Piesen of Strongsville.

Jack Vojtko of Stow had the best finish of local golfers, landing in 11th place.

Wetterich was presented the Ohio Open trophy by Pyramid Treating owners, Roy and Kathy Kommel of Rootstown.

KENT JUNIOR GIRLS GOLF

It is the 17th season for the Junior Girls Golf League that helps girls entering grades three through nine to both learn and love the game of golf.

The league started June 10th and continues for 10 weeks, culminating the final two weeks at the Portage County Kids Amateur and the Parent-Child Scramble.

The league is led by Bryan Harvey, head coach at Kent Roosevelt, assistant coaches and girls from the varsity golf team.

 

ROWLES WINS FUTURES TOUR EVENT

BRIELLE ROWLES

Streetsboro’s Brielle Rowles earned the victory in the girls 12-to-16 age group on the Futures Tour at Washington Park Golf Course in Newburgh Heights.

Rowles fired a 35, just 5-over-par to tie Mackenzie Artzner (Mentor) in the same age group.

Other local golfers playing at Washington Park Futures Tour and their final standings included: 

Boys 12-16: Bo Birchak, Lake Milton, 5th place (41); Andrew Thames, Rootstown, 7th (42).

Girls 8-11: JoJo Birchak, Lake Milton, 10th place (55).

 

KIDS AND JUNIOR PORTAGE COUNTY AMATEURS

The Portage County Kids Amateur is set for July 19 at Sunny Hill Golf Course and the Portage County Junior Amateur competes July 21-22 at Sunny Hill and Raccoon Hill Golf Courses.

We are looking forward to welcoming the outstanding as well as first-time tournament golfers to the Portage County courses in two weeks.

PORTAGE COUNTY AMATEURS

The Portage County Amateurs series is open for registration as the tournaments and golf courses are looking forward to again welcoming outstanding competition.

First up is the Portage County Kids Amateur on July 19 at Sunny Hill Golf Course.

It is a good tune up tournament for incoming freshmen in high school and often a first tournament experience for the youths beginning in elementary school.

High-school golfers walk with the juniors to help teach golf course etiquette, keeping a scorecard, finding golf balls etc.

JULY 21-22—20TH MATT MISHLER PORTAGE COUNTY JUNIOR AMATEUR. July 21 – Sunny Hill Golf Course, Brimfield; July 22 – Raccoon Hill Golf Course, Ravenna. Age Divisions for Boys and Girls: 16-19, 13-15 play 18-holes each day; Boys and Girls 12 and under play nine holes each day. Registration ages 13-19 $60, 12 and under $45. Deadline July 18. Each golfer receives a $10 gift certificate.

JULY 19—12TH PORTAGE COUNTY KIDS AMATEUR. July 19 – Sunny Hill Golf Course, Brimfield (middle nine). Four separate age divisions for boys and girls: Grades 8-9, 6-7 (play nine holes) – $20; Grades 4-5 (play six holes) $20; Grades 3 and under (plays four holes) $15. Deadline July 16.

The NOPGA has several tours for juniors including the Next Level Tour (36 hole events), Performance Tour (18-hole events) and Futures Tour (9 holes).

The Futures Tour are unique nine-hole events giving junior golfers a chance to experience tournament golf in a fun environment.

Members receive a gift and a personalized caddie bib.
