ALREADY IN MID-SEASON FORM

ASHLYN LEAVERY

Junior golfers competing in The Northern Ohio PGA Lake Forest Country Club 18-hole tournament demonstrated they are going to have an outstanding summer season prior to the start of OHSAA golf in August.

Nicholas Pollak of Aurora finished in the top three of the boys 14 and 15 age division, firing an 8-over-par 80. Jack Sarver, also of Aurora, landed in 21st place. Joel Fletcher completed the trio of boys from Aurora competing, playing in the boys 16-19 age division and earning 54th place.

Competing on the Par 72 fairways of the Hudson golf club, Ashlyn Leavery of Kent earned a top-10 finish in the girls 16-to-19 age group, carding a 92.

Minisha Girn of Aurora played to a 14th place finish in the girls 16-to-19 division.

Adrianna Mineo, also of Kent, joined her Lady Riders teammate in the top 20, landing in 15th place, earning a par and a birdie on her way to a 92.

Kent girls success continued

Izzy Wood, Kathryn Ennemoser and Casidy Singer, both of Kent, joined their teammates in the event, finishing 19th, 21st and 25th, respectively, in the girls 16-19 age division.

This week, the junior series continues the NOPGA season with tournaments at Fairlawn Country Club on Monday, Ellsworth Meadows in Hudson on Tuesday and at Catawba Island Club in Port Clinton on Wednesday.

FAIRWAYS AT TWIN LAKES NIGHT GOLF

The Fairways at Twin Lakes in Kent has scheduled the annual Night Golf outing for June 22.

Golfers walk nine holes, playing with glow golf balls to earn prizes and enjoy pizza and drinks.

Call the pro shop at 330-673-7888 to register. The event is $220 per foursome.

OHIO SENIOR OPEN

It was a tough couple days for the professional and amateur golfers in one of the major events on the Northern Ohio PGA Schedule.

The 39th Ohio Senior Open unfortunately had to cancel the first 18-hole round of the normally 36-hole tournament due to a solid day of rain on Wednesday.

However, Thursday saw a dry day for the golfers, only having to contend with some wend on the 18-hole Fazio Course at Firestone Country Club.

Amateur Robert Spino of New Franklin earned the championship, carding three-under-par for 18-holes.

In second was Jeff Mallette of North Canton at two-under-par.

Local golfers included Aurora’s Doug Hauenstein, Larry Lahman, Russell Papa and Gary Trivisonno, Lou Boarman of Mogadore, Robert Schustrich of Windham and former Kent State golfer and Kent State University men’s golf coach, Rob Wakeling.

Wakeling tied for 14th place, competing as an amateur with Gary Trivisonno, each at 1-over-par.

Schustrich tied for 32nd at 4-over-par as an amateur in the tough field. Papa landed in 90th place.

Hauenstein, competing in the Senior Plus division fired a solid one-over-par to earn fourth place. Boarman, in the same division, finished in 30th place.

A WALK THROUGH NATURE

Golf is such a great game to not only enjoy with your friends and family, but to enjoy the natural beauty of the golf courses.

Deer, eagles and the cutest foxes make their homes at area golf courses, along with the usual squirrels and song birds, as well as turtles and fish in and around the lakes and ponds.

Sometimes nature can interfere. Foxes may snatch a golf ball from the fairway. A squirrel once got tangled up with a golf ball on the green and inadvertently moved the ball closer to the hole. (We played it from there, of course. It is where the ball was meant to be.)

It was one of our favorite things to do on the golf course, watch for deer hooves that may have not been repaired by the superintendent yet and spot the various wildlife, especially when our own children were young.

We still spot the wildlife now. Make sure when playing with your family you enjoy the ride or walk through nature instead of just worrying about the tree in the middle of the fairway.
