The high school track and field state championships began on Friday at Ohio State University’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Here is a look at the first-day results.
200 METERS
Luke McGovern, Aurora
• McGovern ran a time of 21.69 in the first heat of preliminaries. His time placed him 12th overall, which missed qualifying for the finals by two spots.
4×100 RELAY
Aurora boys
(Luke McGovern, Quincy John, Ishaan Shaik, Luke Geyer)
• In heat No. 2, the Greenmen quartet finished the race in 41.69 seconds. The time was good for sixth place and a qualifying spot into the finals. Watkins Memorial set the pace in first place at 41.03.
DISCUS
MaKayla Norman, Field
• Norman, a senior, landed her best throw on her second attempt at 118 feet, 2 inches. It was good for a 13th-place finish. Port Clinton’s Michaela Stork won the state championship with her throw of 150 feet, 6 inches.
SHOT PUT
Camden Radeschi, Field
• Radeschi placed seventh in the state on Friday. He landed his best throw at 56 feet, 11.5 inches. That throw came on his third attempt and landed him a podium finish. South Point senior Derrick Taylor won the division’s state final with a throw of 65 feet, 6 inches.
Robert Melzer, Ravenna
• Melzer also landed a podium finish. The Ravens’ senior was eighth in Ohio, landing there with his best throw of 54 feet, 8.25 inches to give Portage County a pair of state-placers.
110 HURDLES
James Durham, Crestwood
• The Red Devils’ senior qualified for the finals with a seventh-place finish in the preliminary round. Durham ran a time of 14.66. The fastest preliminary time was turned in by Fairfield Union senior Chayse Lipscomb at 13.77.
100 METERS
Livia Martini, Crestwood
• Martini, a sophomore, remarkably qualified for Columbus in three events. In the 100 meters, she missed qualifying for the finals after her time of 12.70 in the preliminary race landed her in 17th place. Toledo Central Catholic senior Nyla King had the fastest time in the prelim heats with an 11.73.
4×200 RELAY
Streetsboro boys
(Devon White, Braden Hodge, Ryan Roscoe, Ethan Laryea)
• The Rockets’ group qualified for the finals, placing sixth place overall after the preliminary heats. The quartet ran 1:29.25, with the fastest time turned in by Brookville at 1:27.55.
Ravenna boys
(LaDarion Askew, Bryant Thompson, Mason Scott, Malachi Prisby)
• The Ravens just missed an opportunity to qualify for the finals. The group finished 11th in the prelim round in a time of 1:30.28, missing the chance to qualify by .16 of a second.
300 HURDLES
Lucas Pollard, Field
• The Falcons’ senior will run for a state championship after qualifying for the finals from Friday’s prelims. Pollard ran a time of 39.58 to grab the ninth and final qualifying spot. Indian Valley’s Carsen Hostetler had the fastest prelim time at 38.49.
Logan Border, Field
• The sophomore just missed a chance to advance to the finals. His prelim time was 40.46, which placed him 13th overall out of a group of 18.
400 METERS
Livia Martini, Crestwood
• Martini advanced to the finals and a chance to run for a state championship with an eighth-place spot after the preliminary round. Martini crossed the finish line in 57.75 seconds. The top time was earned by Toledo Central Catholic’s Nyla King at 55.04.
200 METERS
Livia Martini, Crestwood
• In the third of her three qualifying events, Martini placed 14th overall after Friday’s prelims. She ran a time of 25.57, with the last qualifying time, ninth place, being 25.15 seconds. The winning prelim time was Toledo Central Catholic’s Nyla King at 24.03.
200 METERS
Ethan Laryea, Streetsboro
• The Rockets’ junior grabbed the final qualifying spot for the event finals. He ran a time of 22.02 seconds. The top prelim time belonged to Brookville’s Coy Here at 21.51. Laryea landed the ninth and final qualifying spot.
4×200 RELAY
Mogadore girls
(Ari Tompkins, Julie Tompkins, Jessica Holler, Ava Murphy)
• The Wildcats qualified for the finals and a chance to race for a state championship. The group ran a time of 1:45.13 in the preliminary round, which placed them fourth overall. Oberlin’s 1:43.19 was the top prelim time.
400 METERS
Julie Tompkins, Mogadore
• Tompkins placed fifth in the prelims with a time of 57.81. The time qualifies her for the finals.
Ari Tompkins, Mogadore
• Tompkins was 11th in 59.14 and missed qualifying for the finals by two spots.
4×400 RELAY
Mogadore girls
(Julie Tompkins, Ari Tompkins, Jessica Holler, Kasey Bolyard)
• The foursome placed fourth after prelims, racing a time of 4:02.41. The time was good to qualify them for the finals. The top prelim time belonged to Coldwater at 3:58.33.
DISCUS
Elise Edwards, Garfield
• The junior placed 14th in the state. Her best throw traveled 117 feet, 9 inches and came on her third attempt. Caldwell senior Gwyn Lori won the final at 146 feet, 7 inches.
SHOT PUT
Riley Grace, Garfield
• Grace, a junior, placed 11th in Ohio with her best throw going 37 feet, 5 inches. Caldwell’s Gwyn Lori, who also won the discus final, doubled up to win the shot put state championship with a throw of 45 feet, 5.5 inches.
