Beautiful weather greeted the junior golfers competing in the first day of the 19th Matt Mishler Junior Portage County Amateur at Sunny Hill Golf Club in Brimfield on Tuesday.
A field, including some of the top golfers in Portage County, set their sites on low scores for the start of the two-day tournament that concludes at Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Ravenna on Wednesday.
Low score in the clubhouse for the day was fired by James Morgan, a senior this season on the Southeast Pirates varsity golf team, a 3-over-par 74, taking over the lead in the boys 16-19 age division.
Championship pairing for Wednesday at Windmill includes Morgan, Tyler Pendergast of Mogadore (81), Jude Thiry of Mogadore (82) and Bryce Cannon of Ravenna (83).

COCO GOLDEN
Coco Golden of Kent shot her way to an 86, putting her into first place on the initial day. Joining her seeking to win the championship are Jenni Mix, a member of Southeast girls golf team (91) and Ava Miller of Rootstown (101).
It’s anyone’s championship to win in the Boys 13-15 age division.
Andrew VanDamme of Kent worked his way around the course to card a 77. Lurking behind VanDamme on the scoreboard two Mogadore High School golfers, Brock Thiry (82) and Max Simone (88).

ANDREW VANDAMME
Sammy Morgan, recent championship of the Good Park Junior Tournament, continued her great play. The Southeast High School golfer fired an 81 followed by teammate Jenni Mix (92) and Elizabeth Jia of Hudson 98.
Alden Pratt of Rocky River found it was worth traveling south to the Junior Amateur. He leads his age division, carding a solid 40 for nine holes on the Sunny Hill Middle Nine.
Joining Pratt are Carston Chouinard of Copley (42) and Gerren Waesch of Rootstown (56).

ALDEN PRATT
Junior golfers begin teeing off at 11:09 at Windmill Lakes for the challenging layout that the Ravenna course offers.
Home to the Kent State men’s and women’s golf teams, the juniors look to stay in the lead or move up in the standings for this tournament prior to the start of the high school golf season on July 28.
