By the month of June, many golfers have been playing golf consistently since the end of March, but this spring was not kind to the game of golf.

Showers, thunderstorms, heat waves and cold temperatures seem to conspire against golfers.

But June has been kinder with leagues, tournaments and outings as well as junior programs starting with success.

Please take a look at the calendar and note the number of scrambles, junior events, tournaments and the Portage County Amateurs that are all giving opportunities for the competition they most love.

HERB PAGE AND PAULA TRECKEL HONORED

The men’s and women’s golf teams representing Kent State University played this season with new names for their programs as the Golden Flashes honored longtime coach Herb Page and his spouse Paula Treckel.

Herb Page and his wife Paula.

The Board of Trustees approved the naming of the women’s golf program as the “Dr. Paula Treckel Women’s Golf Program” and the men’s golf program as the “Herb Page Men’s Golf Program,” recognizing the vision, leadership and legacy of generosity of Page (1974 and M.A. 1976), and Treckel (1973).

It is the first program at Kent State and one of only several nationwide to be named after donors.

Page was a three-sport athlete while attending Kent State and became the Flashes’ head golf coach in 1977. He served as the universitiy’s director of golf for 41 years until his retirement in 2019.

During his coaching career, Page earned 17 NCAA championship appearances with four top-10 finishes, 28 NCAA regional appearances and 909 team tournament titles.

In 1998, Page was pivotal in launching the women’s golf program at Kent State, a decorated program that earned 21 consecutive conference titles under his leadership and has continued the tradition.

Treckel, an alumnus of Kent State, earned her M.A. and Ph.D. at Syracuse University and taught at the College of Benedict and Saint John’s University in Minnesota before joining the history faculty at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania. There, she was honored with the Julian Ross Award for Excellence in Teaching. She retired in 2014.

Both Page and Treckel were instrumental in shaping the championship legacy of the Kent State Golf Programs, creating the $2.2 million state-of-the-art Ferrara and Page Golf Training Center and creating the $3 million full scholarship endowment for the men’s golf program.
