Par for the Course: Kent State women’s golf seeks unprecedented 27th straight MAC title

The Kent State Golden Flashes, hosting the Mid-American Conference women’s golf tournament at Firestone Country Club, are currently in first place.

The Flashes have won 26 straight championships and are seeking to continue that streak as they host the 54-hole event.

After the first, 18-hole round, Kent State is in first place by one stroke, carding 2-under-par as a team to Eastern Michigan’s 1-under-par.

Also landing in the top three is Bowling Green at 4-over-par.

KSU was led by Veronika Kedronova, currently in first place, firing 3-under-par, closely followed by teammate Leon Takagei in third place at 2-under-par.

Rounding out the team, Isabella Goyette is at 1-over in 10th place, Gracie Larsen in 14th place at 2-over and Peetra Babicova is 21st at 4-over.

The MAC women’s tournament returns to the Fazio Course (West Course) at Firestone Country Club for the second 18-holes on Monday.

 

COLLEGIATE ATHLETES UPDATE

MAX DEVINS

Aurora Greenmen golf team alumnus, has been competing for John Carrol University for two years.

A sophomore for the Blue Streaks, Devins and his teammates recently took firs place at the at the Fred Kravetz Invitational hosted by Syracuse University at the historic Oak Hill Country Club and Locust Hill Country Club, both in Rochester, N.Y.

Devins fired a 71 on the first day of the tournament followed by a 76 and finishing 14th in the event among 35 competitors.

SYDNEY LEAVERY

Kent Roosevelt girls golf team alumnus (2022), competed in her final tournament for LaSalle University.

Competing in the Atlantic 10 Women’s Golf Championship, the team finished sixth overall.

The tournament was held at the Evermore Resort Golf Club in Orlando, Fla.

Leavery finished 25th, firing a 268 in the three-round tournament.

 

NORTHERN OHIO PGA CLUBS FOR KIDS

The Northern Ohio PGA Foundation has been providing golf clubs for girls team, including the Southeast Pirates girls for several years.

This season, the foundation will award 22 high schools in northern Ohio new equipment for the scholastic golf season.

On May 13, at Westfield Country Club, coaches of the schools will be part of the Foundation’s Clubs Fore Kids program receiving 120 sets of clubs, along with golf bags, balls, tees and towels.

The Ravenna Ravens and coach Terry Kekic are among the recipients of the golf clubs. Ravenna High School’s home course is Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Ravenna.

JULY 21-22—20TH MATT MISHLER PORTAGE COUNTY JUNIOR AMATEUR. July 21 – Sunny Hill Golf Course, Brimfield; July 22 – Raccoon Hill Golf Course, Ravenna. Age Divisions for Boys and Girls: 16-19, 13-15 play 18-holes each day; Boys and Girls 12 and under play nine holes each day. Registration ages 13-19 $60, 12 and under $45. Deadline July 18. Each golfer receives a $10 gift certificate.

JULY 19—12TH PORTAGE COUNTY KIDS AMATEUR. July 19 – Sunny Hill Golf Course, Brimfield (middle nine). Four separate age divisions for boys and girls: Grades 8-9, 6-7 (play nine holes) – $20; Grades 4-5 (play six holes) $20; Grades 3 and under (plays four holes) $15. Deadline July 16.
