Regal night in Ravenna: 8th annual ESPYs award-winners announced

Ravenna High School hosted its 8th annual ESPYs athletic-awards ceremony on Wednesday.

The event was initiated by Ravenna social studies teacher and boys soccer coach Matt Wunderle in 2016 as a regal and exciting replacement to the school’s annual Letterwinner’s Dinner.

Wednesday’s prestigious and formal-dress event captured that for the Ravens once again.

Here are a look at the winners of all of the ESPYs.

Male Raven Award: Ben Rainone

Female Raven Award: Avonlea Jefferson

Female Athlete of the Year: Kyla Carney

Male Athlete of the Year: Pavel Henderson

Breakthrough Athlete: Preston Hatcher

Best Individual Performance: Abigail Retherford

Coach of the Year: Marlon Jones

Best Game: Boys basketball vs. Woodridge

Best Upset (tie): Softball’s 3-2 win over Streetsboro; Girls tennis’ Jameson Jordan vs. Woodridge at Metro Athletic Conference Tournament

Best Play (tie): Boys basketball’s Marcus Gibson’s buzzer-beater at Streetsboro; Boys soccer’s Mason Ward’s game-winning goal vs. Streetsboro

Outstanding Team: Boys bowling

Best Dressed: Cheerleading

Elite Scholar-Athlete: Kyla Carney, Reese Johnston
