The Field boys basketball team’s 62-59 overtime win at Salem last Friday night was the program’s first tournament win since 2003.
In 2003, the Falcons, who were coached by Craig Nettleton at that time, defeated Southeast 42-41 in a Stow Division II sectional semifinal contest. The Falcons lost, 60-42, in the sectional final that season to Akron East.
It is not the first bit of history for head coach Alex Blake and his Falcons this season.
Earlier this season (Dec. 19), the Falcons defeated Streetsboro 51-50, giving Field its first win over the Rockets in 15 games.
Mogadore senior girls wrestling standout MJ Shellenbarger, along with Streetsboro junior boys standout Roro Walker and Garfield junior standout Hunter Andel all recently won the 100th match of their successful careers.
For Shellenbarger, she becomes only the fourth female wrestler in Portage County history to reach the achievement.
She joins Crestwood’s Paige Nemec (2007-10), as well as Mogadore’s Mia Gaetjens and Kai Gaetjens.
Nemec is considered a pioneer in girls wrestling — not only in Portage County, but Ohio. She was the first girl to ever win a match at the OHSAA state championships at a time when girls wrestlers did not have their own specific division.
For Walker, he is the 25th wrestler in Streetsboro history to reach the milestone.
Andel is the fifth in school history.
Aurora High School sophomore diving standout Gavin Hensley recently placed 10th overall at the OHSAA Division I state championships.
Hensley, who is already a two-time Suburban League champion, totaled 424.6 points to earn All-Ohio status.
Four Portage County schools will have girls flag football this spring.
Field, Kent Roosevelt, Rootstown and Streetsboro are all members of the Northern Ohio Girls Flag Football League.
