It has been an up and down couple of weeks for Field High School senior boys basketball player Sam Confer.

The downside is that a recurring left shoulder injury will, unfortunately, cost him the remainder of the 2025-26 season.

The upside is that just before his season was cut short, he was able to capture a memory that the majority of players never get to realize: A game-winning buzzer-beater.

Confer’s magical 3-pointer came back on Jan. 23, lifting the Falcons to a thrilling 57-56 overtime victory over the visiting Coventry Comets.

“Sam had been grinding to have one of the games like he had at Coventry,” head coach Alex Blake said of Confer, who scored a season-high 21 points in the win. “He had been rehabbing the same injury, that now has him out for the season, for a few months now. He never took anything for granted for his senior year.”

With 6 seconds left in overtime, Blake called a timeout to set up a sideline out-of-bounds play and drew up a set that had Confer taking the ball out of bounds.

Confer was to look for fellow senior Brian Fox as the primary option, but Blake was sure to relay an important message to Confer while still in the timeout huddle.

“Throw the ball to ‘Foxy,’ but make sure you step in bounds and be ready to shoot the ball in case he can’t get a shot off’.”

Confer’s reply: “OK, I got you.”

When the referee handed the ball to Confer, he initially hit Fox, who had run laterally off a series of screens. As Blake anticipated, the ball ended back in Confer’s hands and he lifted to bury the game-winner.

ANOTHER HALL OF FAME FOR HANNAN

AURORA AND STREETSBORO CHEER ADVANCE TO STATE

The Aurora and Streetsboro cheer programs successfully qualified for the State Competition, which will be held on Feb. 21 at Big Walnut High School in Columbus.

The Greenmen and Rockets both qualified at the regional competition, which was hosted at Jackson High School.

To advance to the state event, teams must compete at regionals and earn a qualifying score of 75 percent or higher.

Unlike some other cheerleading competitions where a set number of top teams advance, the regional competition is based purely on scoring. Teams either meet the qualifying standard or they do not.

Aurora’s cheer team, which is coached by Jessica Pascoe and Christina Pistone, includes Jakki Antonelli, Molly Locker, Adriana Lorello, Gianna Merolla, Ava Onk, Hailey Postan, Genevieve Stanton and Vanessa Zembala.

“We would also like to take a moment to remember and honor our former coach, Cathy Bower, who offered her support and guidance to our team in the past and has since passed away. Her contribution and spirit continue to inspire us,” Pascoe said.

Streetsboro’s cheer team, which is coached by Jackie Ogden and Alli Hoffman, include Nyjah Rangel, Cece Hall, Raegan Collins, Mackenzie McIntosh, Saniya Tucker, Emma Chamberlain, Lizzie Bolyard, Stella Mauler, Amaya Basinger, Autumn Benci, Abby Coy, Sophia Jeffrey and Kylie Sladky.

“This team has actually overcome many obstacles,” Ogden said. “We have had illness and injury setbacks almost weekly causing us to have to modify the routine — sometimes extensively. Every competition, they faced a new challenge with a new girl performing a stunt or part she has never done before. Their resilience each time was remarkable and I could not be more proud of them.”
