The Crestwood High School girls track and field team captured the Division II state championship in 2006.

The Red Devils had a great overall team led by senior standout Bridget Franek, who made history by winning individual state titles in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters, while also running the anchor off the Devils’ 4×800 relay team that also included Cassie Schenck, Megan Miller and Nicole Cozzone.

Franek became the first runner in Ohio history to win all three in any division — male or female.

Following Franek’s third championship run, Crestwood assistant coach Dannielle Harrison said: “We just saw the greatest day in distance running ever in the state of Ohio.”

The three races require somewhat drastically different racing strategies and Franek won her three races in the span of 1 hour, 15 minutes.

At 1:35 p.m., Franek won the state title with a time of 4:56.17. Her teammate, Schenck, placed second in 4:57.76. Field junior Emily Grad placed third in 5:01.92.

At 2:27 p.m., Franek won the 800 meters and set a new state record in the process with a run of 2:11.22.

At about 2:50 p.m., Franek won the 3,200 meters and set another state record, finishing in 10:43.86.

Crestwood’s team state championship was accomplished with only five state qualifiers, with Franek being joined by Schenck, Miller, Cozzone and discus thrower Liz Sitko, who finished seventh.
