Mogadore tasted defeat for the first time in six matches this season Aug. 30 at home to Elyria Open Door Christian 25-23, 25-19, 22-25, 25-19.

“It was a tough loss,” head coach Jessica Butler said. “Open Door played with consistency and strong defensive execution, which challenged us throughout the match. One of our usual strengths, serving, became a setback as we struggled with unforced errors at the service line. Additionally, many of our first touches were out of system, forcing us into a defensive mindset and limiting our offensive opportunities.”

Sophomore setter/outside hitter Emma Butler paced the Wildcats with 22 assists, 18 digs and 13 kills, junior middle hitter/outside hitter Kaitlyn Clester had 16 kills and 13 assists, while senior libero Alana Whitmore notched a dozen digs.

Two days earlier, on Aug. 28, Mogadore defeated Warren John F. Kennedy Catholic on the road 25-21, 17-25, 18-25, 25-21, 15-9.

“This match was a great battle,” said Butler. “JFK is a strong, competitive team, and we knew it wouldn’t be easy. We came out with intensity in the first set, fighting for every point and setting the tone early. However, as the match went on, we struggled with consistency, losing focus. Despite the setbacks, we regrouped and showed resilience in set four, digging deep and playing with heart to force a fifth set. With the momentum back on our side, I knew a strong start would be key, and Emma delivered in a big way, opening the set with a string of aces that set the tone and helped us close out the win.”

The younger Butler had 26 digs, 21 assists and 18 kills; Clester totaled 24 kills, 21 assists and 15 digs; and Whitmore had 16 digs.

“Emma is one of the top performers on our team,” the elder Butler said. “She consistently performs on defense, especially when it comes to protecting against line shots. Offensively, she’s a reliable outlet hitter with a wide variety of shots, making her a versatile and valuable asset on the court.

“Kaitlyn is another one of our standout performers this season. She brings versatility to our offense. She consistently finishes points with confidence and control. Her presence at the net is a major asset, and she’s aggressive on the attack.

“Alana has truly stepped up this year. She has shown solid improvement in serve receive and has dedicated time and effort to refining her skills. Her defensive presence has been key; she’s digging tough balls and making crucial saves for our team.”

The coach is thrilled at her team’s fast start to the season but realizes the hardest challenges lay ahead.

“Staying consistent in our performance and confident in our abilities will be crucial for keeping our momentum,” she said. “We need to focus on staying composed, shaking off mistakes quickly and bringing our energy to the next play. If we keep working hard, supporting each other and remaining dedicated to our goals, there’s no limit to what we can accomplish together this season.”
