TEAM OUTLOOK

“Our junior class is the backbone of the team,” head coach Dan Andel said. “We have two returning state qualifiers and a solid lineup overall.”

WE HAVE A SUCCESSFUL SEASON IF…

“We need to continue to fill our weight classes.”

LIGHTWEIGHTS

(106-132 POUNDS)

The group is highlighted by Cam Lewicki, Luke Kaufman, Maddox White and Max Bultrowicz.

Lewicki qualified for Columbus and the OHSAA state championships a season ago. He is the only returning senior and only returning letterman in the weight class group.

“We expect to see him put in the work this season and position himself to be successful in Columbus come March,” Andel said.

Kaufman very nearly made it to Columbus last season. He fell one match short, but had a very strong and successful season.

“Luke works hard and has put in a lot of work in the off-season.”

White and Gultrowicz are two additional lightweights who are expected to push for opportunities.

MIDDLEWEIGHTS

(138-165 POUNDS)

Landon Andel returns after a sensational sophomore season that ended in Columbus at the Division III state championships, where he lost a pair of tightly battled matches.

Leading up to the road to Columbus, Andel won a sectional championship and was also a runner-up at the district tournament.

“Landon finished strong last season. He should definitely be chasing the top end of the podium this year.”

Also breaking into the lineup this season are Cole Porter, Hayden Farrer, Alex White and Marc Grubb.

UPPERWEIGHTS

(175-HEAVYWEIGHT)

Garfield’s lineup features Logan Sell, Parker Hill, Darren Welch, Sam Strahan and Ryder Cain.

Sell, a junior, is a multisport standout, who is described by Andel as “a force to be reckoned with” this season.

“He qualified for the Fargo Cadet Team in Greco this past season, and we are looking forward to seeing him on the podium in Columbus this year.”

Andel has also been impressed with Cain, who is a sophomore with budding potential.

“Ryder has a ton of talent and is an all-around athlete. If he puts in the time, he will definitely be one of our top performers.”
