The Southeast Pirates defeated Brookfield at Olde Dutch Mill Golf Course in Lake Milton to avenge an earlier loss this season at Brookfield’s home course of Yankee Lake.

JAMES MORGAN

“This was a big win for the Pirates,” said Mike Jenior, Southeast varsity boys coach. “Brookfield is a great team all around. They are the defending champs for a reason and for us to pick up a win against them shooting our best score of the season at home says a lot about our team. They played with a lot of confidence in a big match, it was a total team effort.”

Senior James Morgan, who was battling a slight flu, still managed to score an outstanding 2-under-par 34 to earn medalist honors in the match and set the pace.

Cole Bruno (39), Alex Peelish (39) and Ethan Shodd (40) added up to an outstanding score of 152 for Southeast to best Brookfield by 13 strokes.

Brookfield was led by Brayden Demaria.

With the victory, the Pirates are seeking to defeat LaBrae this Thursday at Olde Dutch Mill to put all three teams into a three-way tie going into the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference championship tournament on Sept. 17 at Salem Hill Golf Course in Salem.

BEATTY LEADS ROOSEVELT TO THIRD PLACE

Freshman Brook Beatty fired an 83 at Weymouth Country Club in Medina to lead the Rough Riders’ girls golf team to a third-place finish in the American Division of the Suburban League’s third tournament.

It was the third of four tournaments for the league.

Beatty’s 83 was runner-up medalist only to Elizabeth Coleman of Medina Highland. Coleman carded a 76.

Roosevelt was consistent in its scoring, including Coco Golden’s 91, Adrianna Mineo’s 92, Makenna Ward’s 100, Kaila Kovolyan’s 101 and Kate Ennemoser’s 105.

The Aurora girls earned fourth place, carding a team total of 409 behind team medalist Kelly Macsurak 95 and runner-up Bennett DeLua 97.

The Suburban League girls will complete their fourth tournament and conference final at Brookledge Golf Club in Cuyahoga Falls on Sept. 24.

ROOSEVELT BOYS EARN RUNNER-UP

The Rough Riders’ boys golf team fired a 330, just five strokes off the pace of tournament champion Medina Highland (325) to keep themselves in the running for a conference championship in the Suburban League American Division.

Deacon Smith fired an 81 with Jaxon Turner, Jack Flynn and Owen Puhalla all turning in scores of 83 as Roosevelt finished 18 strokes ahead of third-place Revere.

The Aurora Greenmen earned fourth place (354) led by Brady Allenick and Dylan Lancaster, each carding an 87.

The Suburban League boys will compete in their third tournament at Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Ravenna on Sept 16.
