James Morgan, a senior golfing for the Southeast Pirates, had a nine-hole round to remember as the Pirates defeated Liberty at Olde Dutch Mill Golf Course in Lake Milton.
Morgan set the Southeast Pirates nine-hole match record, a 31, earlier this season.
This week, he broke his own record, firing a 29.
Yes, a 29.
That’s 7-under-par on the par 36 front nine of Olde Dutch.
The round included two eagles and three birdies.
Morgan, only the second golfer to qualify and advance to the state tournament for Southeast when he was a junior, has been carding under-par rounds often throughout the season and enjoys the support of a solid team including Cole Bruno, Logan Blankenship, Alex Peelish, Ethan Shodd and Owen Dembroski.
It seems like the golf season just started, but conferences will conclude play at tournaments in mid-September with OHSAA girls and boys sectional tournaments beginning Sept. 17.

Southeast’s Jessi Mix
It will be a busy two weeks for golf teams as they conclude their matches and prepare for a run at the state tournament.
The Division II state tournaments are scheduled for Oct. 6-7 at NCR Country Club in Kettering for the boys and Heatherwoods Golf Club in Springboro for the girls.
The Division I boys and girls state tournament will take over Akron’s Firestone Country Club on Oct. 12-13 and the Division III boys state tournament competes at NorthStar Golf Club, Sunbury, Oct. 13-14.
In 2024, the Southeast girls team, including Taylor Blazek, Samantha Morgan, Aubree Varga, Jessica Mix and Jennifer Mix, qualified; and individuals qualifying included Liam Curtis of Kent and James Morgan.
The Southeast girls return everyone to their state-qualifying team except for Blazek, who is now competing for the Gannon University Golden Knights in Erie, Pa.
Curtis is a member of the Kent State University Golden Flashes this season as a freshman and Morgan is a senior for Southeast.
With the start of school, most golf teams are returning to matches after school.
If you are planning to attend a match to watch the athletes, make sure that you call ahead or check the schedule to make sure that there hasn’t been a change.
And, yes, high-school golf is a spectator sport.
Just make sure you walk one half-hole ahead or behind the athlete you are watching and remain in the rough or on the cart path instead of spending your time in the fairway.
Just like other sports, you are not permitted to talk to the high-school golfer during a match other than to offer a soft golf clap for a great shot.
