And then there were two.
It has been an amazing season for high-school golf in Portage County:
• Four teams won conference championships
• Individuals and teams broke school records
• Teams and individuals advanced in the postseason
After the many successes, there are now two remaining teams in the postseason seeking to earn their ticket to the OHSAA State Tournament.
The Mogadore Wildcats compete Monday in the Division III district at Tannenhauf Golf Club in Alliance.
The team has dominated their dual matches this season — even though the team is not in a conference, playing as an independent for the first time.
Coach Chris Mossa has been setting goals for the team all season and the state tournament is the ultimate goal for his talented team.
Finishing runner-up in the sectional tournament at Salem Hills in Salem, Mogadore will be competing against the other 13 teams in the district, including defending state champion Warren John F. Kennedy.
The top-three teams and three individuals out of the Tannenhauf District qualify for the state tournament.
The girls from Kent earned a spot in the Division I district when they finished second out of the top-four teams that qualified at the Division I sectional at Old Avalon Golf Club in Warren.
The Rough Riders played their final year in the Suburban League this season, with Roosevelt scheduled to move to the Metro Athletic Conference for the 2026-27 academic year.
Coach Bryan Harvey was very proud of the girls on the team and their hard work and efforts at the sectional tournament to finish second as they had limited postseason experience.
The top-four teams and four individuals advance from the Division I district hosted at Tanglewood Golf Club in Chagrin Falls.
JAMES MORGAN, SOUTHEAST
James Morgan concluded his high school golfing career at the Division II district at Windmill.
It was definitely a career and a season to remember.
During Morgan’s four years on the golf team:
• He led the school to its first conference championship since 2013
• He was three-time Player of the Year and did it in two different conferences — Portage Trail Conference and Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference
• He holds the school record for nine holes (29) and 18 holes (69)
• He owns the lowest-scoring average in school history
“It was an absolute privilege to be able to watch James grow as a player and an individual,” said Mike Jenior, coach of the Pirates. “Not only is he the best golfer to ever play for the Pirates, he is also the best teammate and leader that any program could ever have. He deserves all the best.”
Watch this column in coming weeks for a look back at several of the best golfers and teams in Portage County this season as golfer made an impact in five different conferences.
