There were three OHSAA tournaments on Wednesday featuring teams from Portage County as the Southeast girls sought a second berth at the state tournament and Kent Roosevelt, Streetsboro and Aurora looked to advance to the upcoming Division I district events.
In the end it was the Rough Riders who were successful, advancing to the Division I district tournament at Tanglewood Golf Club in Chagrin Falls on Tuesday.
After successful seasons both Aurora and Streetsboro just missed the invitation to the District and the Southeast girls fell short of a consecutive trip to the state tournament by six strokes.
It was a beautiful day at Old Avalon Golf Course as the club in Warren welcomed 17 teams and several individuals to the Division I sectional, seeking to grab one of the four team and four-individual spots advancing to the district.
Throughout the 18 holes, the Riders moved up the leaderboard to eventually finish as the runner-up of the sectional tournament, falling only behind the girls from Canfield.
Adrianna Mineo fired an 80 to finish in sixth place followed by Brooke Beatty in 11th with an 86, Coco Golden’s 91 good for 22nd and Kate Ennemoser and Kaila Kovolyan carding 96.
For the Riders, it was a day of successes.
“Adrianna had a very good day today,” said coach Bryan Harvey about his senior. “A strong front nine and solid chipping enabled her to lead the team.
“Brooke (Beatty) played well for her first sectional,” continued the coach. “A strong finish kept her score in the mid 80s.
“Coco (Golden) started strong and then avoided a big score the rest of the way and made some big putts. Kate (Ennemoser) and Kaila (Kovolyan) did pretty good in their first-ever sectional tournament. If they had a rough hole, they made up for it on the next hole,” said Harvey.
“I am very happy for the girls, especially the seniors,” said the coach. “With limited postseason experience, it is a testament to their hard work to finish runner-up in a sectional tournament.”
Aurora finished in sixth place, just out of the four advancing spots and only 11 strokes behind district-qualifier Kenston. Aurora was led by senior Courtney Zeid’s 90. The team has a bright future with three sophomores and one junior joining Zeid at the sectional.
The Pirates again qualified for the district tournament as they sought to repeat their efforts of 2024 and advance to the state tournament.
Playing at Good Park Golf Course in Akron, the girls needed to land among the top-two teams to continue to the OHSAA State Tournament — a tall order for any of the 12 teams and 12 individuals competing.
Playing tough throughout the day, the Pirates finished the 18th hole in third place having climbed the leaderboard throughout the day.
They only had to wait for the final scoring of Chagrin Falls in second place and just strokes ahead of Southeast.
In the end, Chagrin Falls maintained its lead and the Pirates fell short of advancing to the state tournament again by only six strokes.
The solid showing at the district completed an outstanding season for the Pirates that included earning the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference league championship, something they have accomplished two years in a row.
The team was led by sophomore Sammy Morgan, carding an 83 followed by seniors Jessica Mix 97 and Aubree Varga 88, sophomore Jennifer Mix 99 and freshman Emily Morrison 89.
Streetsboro, also seeking to advance to the Tanglewood Division I District tournament, moved in and out of the top four through most of the first nine holes
Eventually, the Rockets ended their tournament in eighth place among some of the top teams in the state, including champion Walsh Jesuit and runner-up Hudson.
Adrianna Jacobs, a junior, led the team with a 93 followed by junior Aryana Puleo 100, senior Sarah Czirok 103, senior Hazel Schoenherr 107 and senior Claire Campbell 119.
