The Bombers are transitioning to 8-Man football this fall and with it will come a change in offensive approach, according to veteran coach Jake Eye.
“We will look to go to the air a little more with a. Spread style offense,” Eye said.
“We want to play with tempo and aggression.”
Bryan Smithberger, a junior, returns after serving as the team’s starter last year.
“We look for him to have a great season,” Eye said.
The backfield is a strong suit for the Bombers, with Dejuan Ramsey, Alex Eye, Michael Bolyard, Aidan Burns, Aidan McGahee and Dom Smith all in the mix.
Ramsey’s speed will be a nice gamebreaking option on the edge, with Eye, Bolyard and Burns all providing the power running between the tackles.
It has Eye feeling good about what the run game could produce.
“We have a very good backfield,” Eye said.
Devin Sherman is the team’s anchor in the trenches, but he will receive positive help from Zach Shultz, Malice Petrich and Jakob Dallner.
With the Bombers’ heightened use of the pass game, Cam Batterby, Keegan Kiser and Kyle Crisman are expected to have an increased impact on the offense compared to a year ago.
“They will see plenty of action. They are all very athletic, quick and have exceptional hands,” Eye said.
Windham’s offense may find its footing in 8-Man football before its defense — simply because the removal of three players on each side turns the game into much more of a space and speed game.
“Defenses are at a disadvantage,” Eye said. “However, we will preach a controlled chaos style. Our goal is to always out-physical the opponent.”
Alex Eye was second on the team in tackles last year with 53.
Joining him to anchor the middle are Smithberger and Bolyard, with Burns and McGahee on the outside.
“We feel this will be our strength defensively,” Eye said.
Sherman, Petrich, Shultz, Riley Christener and Zander Marshall have “all had great camps,” according to Eye.
It has led Eye to feel like the position group “will be much improved this season.”
The secondary will be filled by Ramsey, Kiser, Batterby and Crisman.
“All are poised to improve upon last year,” Eye said.
Aiden Burns, fresh.; Kyle Crisman, fresh.; Dom Smith, fresh.; Zander Marshall, fresh.
“All four are freshmen and will see substantial time on both sides of the ball and special teams,” Eye said. “This will be a great group to follow as their careers progress.”
“With the transition to 8-Man, learning new terminology may present problems early, but so far the players have adapted nicely,” Eye said. “Numbers are hovering around 20, so as usual, we will need to avoid injuries and stay as healthy as possible.”
