Welcome to Week 2 of the high school football season.

Last week’s openers brought a little bit of everything, including a storm-shortened Thursday start for Kent Roosevelt-Ravenna, a beautiful Friday night and then a “Part II” for Kent Roosevelt-Ravenna when they rescheduled the finish of The Game for Saturday afternoon.

Best of luck to all of the programs tonight and safe travels to and from games.

A TIME FOR HISTORY

Mogadore and Ravenna are the two winningest programs in Portage County history.

Mogadore’s program tops the list with 713 and Ravenna is second with 644.

But they have never played each other in a regular-season game.

Until Friday in Mogadore.

The two programs were longstanding scrimmage partners throughout the 1990’s and early 2000’s.

However, potentially the difference in enrollment size kept the two programs from ever scheduling previously. Ravenna’s enrollment had once placed them with close to 450 boys, but that number has shrunk to the low to mid 200s.

Mogadore’s enrollment has not shifted too much, and it is still considerably smaller than Ravenna.

Maybe the more relevant connection for the two programs to play lies in the fact that there are program connections now.

Ravenna head coach Joe Callihan graduated from Mogadore in 2013 and is now in his second year leading the Ravens’ program. He has filled out his coaching staff with some Wildcat minds, including Steve Poth as his offensive coordinator and ………

This leaves Kent Roosevelt as the only Portage County team that Mogadore has never played.

The Wildcats had played Kent State High School 10 times, with a 6-4 record (thank you to www.mogadorefootball.com for the historical help), but have never played the Rough Riders.
