Field junior Logan Border has a funny way of dealing with shin splints.

He wins championships.

At least he did in the 110 hurdles with a clocking of 14.75 May 2 at the 45 th Optimist Invitational at Austintown Fitch.

“To see Logan pull off a win after he’d had to sit out for a little while was good for his self-confidence,” head coach Ed Conroy said. “He took care of business and did what he needed to do. That was a big win for Logan. That will be a big confidence booster for him for the next couple weeks.”

Senior Trevor Dixon tied for third in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 9 inches.

“Trevor is normally a 6-2 high jumper,” said Conroy, “but the cold and snow affected him. It affected everyone.”

Overall, the Falcons finished fourth out of 22 teams with 43.5 points.

“Unfortunately,” the coach said, “we’re still working through a few kids with injuries or I think we’d have been a little bit higher. We’re getting ourselves geared up and starting to get tuned up for the postseason. This was a good challenge and a good opportunity to go to such a good invitational that has strong competition from around the area as well as a few Division I schools. We’re happy with how we finished. We just need to get a few of our athletes healthy.”

ROOTSTOWN

Two relay teams turned in third-place finishes for Rootstown last Saturday at the 68th annual Cuyahoga Heights Relays.

Seniors Jacob Strum and Wyatt Shenal, junior Tycho Smolk and freshman Grant Stevenson combined for a time of 20:28.79 in the 4×1,600.

“We don’t have a great guy in the mile this year,” head coach Larry Bailey said, “but they ran pretty well.”

Aiden Long (109-2, sixth), Tyson Rainer (103-6, eighth) and Eli Dye (78-1, 13 th ) joined forces for a combined distance of 290-9 in the discus relay.

“What was unique about that was that all three throwers are freshmen,” said Bailey. “I’ve never had three freshmen in any throwing event, really in any event.”

Overall, the Rovers finished fifth out of eight teams with 35 points.

RAVENNA

Two seniors performed well for Ravenna on April 30 at the Mogadore Wildcat Invitational — Curtis Ross and Teddy Mitchell.

Ross was fourth in the 800 with a season-best time of 2:11.48 and also anchored the 4×100 relay to a runner-up finish with a clocking of 45.21, another season best.

“Curtis is really looking forward to going to state in the 800,” head coach Ceon Kelly said. “He knows he has to run 2:01 or 2:02 to fight for that state spot.”

Mitchell placed fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:12.78, right behind his classmate, beating his personal best by 10 seconds.

“Teddy has been showing improvement all season long,” said Kelly. “He’s been working hard.

“They both ran really well.”

Overall, the injury-ravaged Ravens finished fifth out of eight teams.
