Editor’s Note: The top-four finishers in each event at each district qualified for this weekend’s regional meets.
Streetsboro’s Ethan Laryea has a legitimate shot of making it to the Division II state meet in both the 100 and 200, according to head coach Robb Kidd.
Laryea qualified for a regional meet May 29 and May 31 at Austintown-Fitch by turning in sensational performances at a district meet May 22 and May 24 at Cortland Lakeview. He captured the championship in the 200 with a time of 22.35 and finished second in the 100 with a time of 11.05.
“Ethan’s 100 time was a solid time for him, but he’s been sub-10 several times. We know he’s strong here,” Kidd said. “He usually races up to whatever level of competitor we have on the track. He’s just at a different level right now. He’s been running phenomenally all May, and we expect phenomenal things from him at regionals. He’s going to have to run his best times.”
Laryea was also the anchor on both the winning 800 relay (1:31.21) and winning 400
relay (53.57). Joining him on the 800 relay were Devon White, Braden Hodge and Ryan Rosco, and joining him on the 400 relay were White, Rosco and Jayron Chester.
“Those guys on the 800 relay have been running pretty solid. That wasn’t their fastest time by any stretch. We think they have a pretty good shot of advancing to state,” said Kidd.
“The 400 relay was going against some pretty fast teams. They’re peaking at the right time.” White and Hodge joined forces with Chris Daniels and Jaiden Kendrick on the runner-up 1,600 relay that clocked in at 3:29.45.
White also finished third in the long jump with a leap of 19-10.5. Hodge also finished third in the 400 with a time of 51.75, while Kendrick placed fourth (52.02).
“Both Braden and Jaiden are capable of running faster,” the coach said. “Jaiden has been one of the biggest surprises this season. He’s quickly become one of our most reliable, fastest 400 runners. He’s looking to make a bigger splash at regionals.”
Hayden Rudd finished third in the 110 hurdles (15.25), Tim Harkleroad placed fourth in the 3,200 (9:47.23) and Cooper Richmond was second in the discus (139-10).
Team-wise, the Rockets finished second.
Cedric Martin has been the difference this year in how Field has grown as a team.
“Cedric has really helped us in the sprint events,” head coach Ed Conroy said. “He’s broken the school record in the 100 and 200 and is on both relays — the 800 and 1,600 — that broke school records.”
Martin’s latest exploits came in the Division II district meet May 22 and May 24 at Salem in which he qualified for a regional meet in those four events May 29 and May 31 at Austintown Fitch. He finished second in both the 100 (11.04 seconds) and 200 (22.47). He was joined by Lucas Pollard, Tysen Paynther and Evan Pruszynski on the second-place 1,600 relay that had a time of 3:27.39. Martin and Pollard joined forces with Logan Border and Isaac Czaplicki to
finished third in the 800 relay with a time of 130.7.
Border also was runner-up in the 110 hurdles (14.86), while Pollard took third (15.2).
Pollard was second in the 300 hurdles (39.94), and Border was third (41.05).
Camden Radeschi finished second in both the shot put (50 feet, 3.5 inches) and discus (146-9). Trevor Dixon finished second in the high jump with a leap of 6-2.
Parker Shutty, Tristan Hogan, Mason Prusha and Evan Pruszynski combined to finish runner-up in the 3,200 relay, clocking in at 8:12.32. Shutty also finished third in the 1,600 (4:29.92) and fourth in the 3,200 (10:01.48).
The Falcons won their first district championship out of 16 teams with 119 points.
Mogadore’s Jason Garvin came up just short of advancing to the state meet in the longjump a year ago. He is on the right path to Columbus this season; he won the long jump with a leap of 21-1 in the Division III district meet May 23 at Ravenna, qualifying for a regional meet May 28 and May 30 at North Royalton.
“Jason is one of the hardest working kids who I’ve seen. He’s a true leader. He works hard and never complains. The younger kids look up to him,” head coach Matt Bogner said. “He takes track and field very, very seriously. If he jumps the way he thinks he’s going to, if he can hit the 22 mark based upon the seeds, that might get him down to Columbus.”
Junior Cameron Brady finished third in both the 800 (2:04.24) and 1,600 (4:37.31), while freshman Quarviyon Siggers placed fourth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 45.42.
“Cam did fantastic,” said Bogner. “He’s been working hard all season. He’s real excited about performing at regionals for a chance to go to state. He’s been solid for the last three years now. If he can knock a couple seconds off his 800 time, he has a really good chance to go to state. Quarviyon has worked hard all season. Making it to regionals in the 300 hurdles as a freshman is pretty exceptional.”
Aurora’s 400-meter and 800 relays led the way regarding Division I regional qualifiers in a district meet May 23 at Austintown-Fitch. Both relays included Luke McGovern, Luke Geyer,
Quincy John and Ishaan Shaik.
“Both relays ran really well,” head coach Chris Radke said. “They already have the school record in both events, and almost every time they run they break it by a little bit more.”
McGovern also qualified for regionals in the 100 and 200. Shaik also advanced in the high jump.
Other regional qualifiers were Johnny Trivisonno in the long jump, Athan Salgado in the 400 and Nathan Eminian in the 3,200. Also advancing was the 3,200 relay that consisted of Eminian, Carson Aardema, Oliver Nenadal and Connor Flynn.
The Greenmen will compete in the regional meet at Austintown-Fitch May 28 and May 30.
Keyshawne Anderson was Waterloo’s lone regional qualifier in the Division III district meet May 23 at Ravenna. He finished second in the 100 with a time of 11.55 and third in the 200 with a time of 23.0.
“Keyshawne did a great job,” head coach Jeff Sharkey said. “Because the semifinals were cancelled due to inclement weather, he had to run in the second to last heat, so he didn’t get to run in the fast heat, which is very difficult to place when you do that. He ran absolutely great in both races – coming from the second heat especially.”
Anderson will compete at a regional meet May 28 and May 30 at North Royalton.
Gianni Damicone was Rootstown’s only regional qualifier in the Division III district meet May 23 at Ravenna. He finished second in the discus with a throw of 139-9 and fourth in the shot put with a toss of 44-5.5.
“I thought Gianni did pretty well considering he had a really bad headache,” head coach Larry Bailey said. “He didn’t throw the discus as far as he normally does.”
Damicone will compete at a regional meet May 28 and May 30 at North Royalton.
