The Streetsboro Rockets put an exclamation point on their outstanding season, winning the Metro Athletic Conference boys golf tournament to earn the overall championship on Thursday.
After a slow start that saw all three teams at the top — Streetsboro, Cloverleaf and Norton — bouncing back and forth into the top spot, Streetsboro dominated on the final nine to win by seven strokes over Cloverleaf and eight strokes over Norton with a final team score of 354.
Leading the way was Dominic Marcini earning runner-up medalist (83), with teammate Brett Epple also making the top 10, firing an 87, good for sixth place.
Streetsboro combined its tournament win with a regular-season win to take home the MAC’s overall championship.
Additional golfers on the Rockets earning the title included Bryce Pocek (91), Brody Sanford (04), Evan Reger (93) and Tyler Schramm (102).
Streetsboro also beat fellow Portage County teams Field (376) and Ravenna.
Field’s best was fired by Joey Conroy (91), while Ravenna, with three competing golfers, was led by Jason Tanner (114).
“After we shared the league championship last year, the players had a goal of winning both the regular-season and postseason tournament,” said Bruce Thomas, coach of the Rockets.
“I am very proud of our senior leadership this year. Over the last two years, this team has gone 28-2 in the MAC and 29-7 overall and did not lose a league match at home over that time period.”
Next up for the Streetsboro, Field and Ravenna is the Division II OHSAA sectional tournament next week.
