Portage Sports Staff Report
The very first golf tournament to bring all of the boys and girls golf teams in Portage County together is now official.
The inaugural Portage County High School Golf Championship has been scheduled for Sept. 8 at the Raccoon Hill Golf Club in Kent.
In total, 11 boys golf teams and seven girls golf teams will compete and the excitement for the event has already been building.
Bryan Harvey, coach of the Kent Roosevelt girls golf team and manager of The Fairways at Twin Lakes, along with Susan Jenior, Portage Sports journalist and tournament director of the Portage County Amateurs, have organized the 18-hole tournament that includes all schools that are currently split across five conferences.
The groundbreaking event has been something that Harvey and Jenior have talked about for several years, looking toward an outstanding event similar to tournaments sponsored by other counties.
The competition will be an 18-hole shotgun start, with team and individual awards presented.
Five golfers from each school will fill out the tournament roster for the boys and girls competition.
The Fairways at Twin Lakes is sponsoring the event, with scoreboards sponsored by Portage Sports.
Harvey, Jenior and Jason Turner, manager at Raccoon Hill, will run the event.
“We are looking forward to this being a special event for all golfers,” said Harvey.
