It’s conference tournament time.

Metro teams competed in the Metro Athletic Conference end-of-season bowling tournament on Saturday at Spins Bowl in Akron and Chagrin Valley Conference teams took the lanes for their final event on Sunday at Sky Lanes in Garrettsville.

In both events, it was Portage County girls teams rising to the top as the Streetsboro Rockets girls earned the victory in the MAC and the Rootstown Rovers girls took home the championship in the CVC.

Kent Roosevelt’s boys and girls teams also competed in the Suburban League postseason championships

THE CVC GIRLS

The Rootstown Rovers have been a strong competitor no matter what conference they are competing. After winning four straight conference championships in the Portage Trail Conference, the girls again rose to the top of the Chagrin Valley Conference tournament this season.

New to the conference this season, Rootstown fired a 3,067 team total to top both Wickliffe (2nd place, 2,810) and Lakeside (3rd place, 2,727).

Rootstown’s Kaitlyn Hammerschmidt earned the high series of the event, totaling a 504 high series with a 196 high game. The Rovers’ Olivia Davies finished fourth, 177-477 and teammate Valerie Derteen rolled a 159-427 to finish in the top 12.

“After winning four straight conference championships in the Portage Trail Conference, the girls, coached by Andy Day, rose to the top of the Chagrin Valley Conference tournament this season.”

The girls of Streetsboro rolled the high two team games of the tournament, 818-834 and, added with their 696 game, the team was in the lead following the first three regular games.

The girls were consistent competing in the six Baker games and combined for a 214 Baker that was the highest of the team Bakers in the event.

Five Streetsboro girls were in the top 15 of the tournament, including sophomore Natalie Southerland’s 182-507 and Ava Clark’s 180-501, second and third respectively.

Amy Rein grabbed sixth place individual, bowling a 459 series and tied with Jorden Brigham 459.

Rounding out the scoring for the Rockets was Kendall Clark’s 422.

The team is filled with underclassmen as Brigham is the only senior on the team.

“I am incredibly proud of this team and how far they’ve come,” said Matt Stump, coach of the Rockets. “A wonderful group of girls.”

“What I am most proud of is that throughout the season I’ve had opposing teams’ parents and coaches share that they admire the chemistry this team exhibits,” continued Stump.

“Led by senior Kendall Clark, they bowled well throughout the season, learning from mistakes and growing each day. The future of the Ladies Rolling Rockets is bright,” concluded Stump enthusiastically.

In addition, the Ravenna girls earned fifth place and Field sixth place among the eight team field.

Future Greater Portage County League member, Akron Springfield, earned fourth place.
