High School Roundup (Aug. 20): Crestwood soccer rolls to 9-0 rout over Rittman

BOYS SOCCER

CRESTWOOD 9, RITTMAN 0

The boys soccer season got started in a big way for the Red Devils on Saturday afternoon with a rout of visiting Rittman.

Crestwood jumped out to a 4-0 halftime lead before it grew to 9-0 in the second half.

Sophomore Elijah Jurisch (2 goals), senior Jayden Julian (2) and junior Gavin Dunfee (2) all had multi-goal games, while freshman Kyle Shelhamer, senior Luke Wilcox and sophomore Sam Wright all added a goal each.

Jurisch added three assists to his big day, while Shelhamer had a pair of assists and Julian and Dunfee had one each.

As a team, the Red Devils had 23 shots on goal.

 

GIRLS SOCCER

SOUTHEAST 5, NEWTON FALLS 0

The Pirates got into the win column for the first time this season with a commanding 5-0 victory over visiting Newton Falls.

The Pirates had opened their season last Friday in a 4-0 loss to Streetsboro as part of the OHSAA’s “Friday Night Futbol” initiative.

On Saturday, Cami McPeak netted a hat trick to lead the way for Southeast.

Sophia Fischer and Anna Keto scored a goal each, while McPeak and Fischer alsoadded an assists, as did Lexi Morris, Mya Sutcliffe, Sarah Craver.

As a team, the Pirates dominated possession and out-shot Newton Falls 28-1.

 

VOLLEYBALL

ROOTSTOWN DEF. EAST CANTON: 25-14, 25-21;

TUSLAW DEF. ROOTSTOWN: 25-23, 25-8

The Rovers’ volleyball team opened their 2022 season with a split at Tuslaw in a tri-match that also included East Canton.

In the first game, Rootstown dominated East Canton and picked up the victory.

Nadia Lough had seven kills, while Allison Strickland had eight assists, five points and four aces. Taylor Banks added 11 assists for Rootstown.

In the second game, the Rovers struggled against a quick Tuslaw team.

Statistical leaders against Tuslaw were Lindsay Smith with three kills, Jessica Hahn with six digs and Strickland with five points and three aces.
