I am writing today not just as an athlete, but as someone who has used passion to find my purpose and fulfillment.

Growing up in Kent, Ohio, sports were more than just a hobby.

KAYLA FISCHER

They were the way I lived.

Shaping my character and driving my ambitions as a young girl.

Growing up, I was immersed in a household where competition, dedication and the Lord were central.

Growing up the oldest of three sisters, I learned that determination and a strong work ethic were essential.

These traits were instilled in me by one of my biggest supporters and first coach: My dad.

My dad often reminded me that while skill is crucial in sports, it’s the effort and heart that elevate an athlete to the next level.

As a young player, I didn’t fully grasp the depth of his words, but they resonate with me more and more throughout each coming stage of my athletic career.

My love for basketball and soccer fueled my dreams of becoming a professional athlete.

Despite the doubts and unconventional paths I encountered, the one thing that never wavered was my passion for playing the game. Playing with and against boys as a young girl instilled a fierce competitive edge and drive.

My journey hasn’t been straight forward.

I made tough decisions, like changing schools to be closer to home and choosing a different path than initially planned.

To be transparent, I was going to retire after my college career.

I attribute much of the support my mom gave me during this time to the reason why I am playing today.

Through it all, I’ve been fortunate to have mentors and coaches who believed in me and helped shape my journey.

Now, as I navigate my career in the NWSL, I carry these lessons with me.

I am reminded every day throughout my life that success isn’t just about talent.

It’s about the passion that drives us forward to do what we love and love what we do.

As you navigate your own path of pursuing your dreams, whether it be in sports or in any other field, remember that your journey is uniquely yours.

Surround yourself with mentors and supporters who believe in your potential.

Seek out role models who inspire you and learn from them. Listen and observe.

Understand that the road ahead may not always be smooth or straightforward.

There will be obstacles and setbacks along the way, but each is an opportunity to learn and become more resilient.

Success isn’t always always a linear journey.

It’s a journey marked by determination, passion and commitment.

Nonetheless, be OK with being different.

As I was once told, once you find your passion — go for it.
