Par for the Course: Kent State alum Steve Parker inducted into HOF

Kent State Golden Flashes golf team member and alumnus Steve Parker, current head professional at Portage Country Club in Akron, was inducted into the Northern Ohio PGA Hall of Fame at the organization’s fall meeting.

Parker, a former Northern Ohio PGA president, began his professional career in 1996 after earning All-Mid-American Conference honors twice competing for Kent State.

Parker won the Ohio Junior Championship in 1985, the 2022 Senior Toledo Open, the 2017 Denny Shute Senior Match Play and the 1996 NOPGA Assistant’s Championship, qualified five times to the PGA Professional Championship and twice to the PGA Senior Professional Championship.

 

 

FOCUS ON PORTAGE COUNTY COLLEGIATE ATHLETES

SAMANTHA MILLER, STREETSBORO

Samantha Miller competed for the Rockets’ varsity girls golf team before taking her talents to the Muskingum Fighting Muskies.

Miller is currently a junior on the roster, competing in events throughout the fall, including the Wittenberg Classic at Springfield Country Club as Miller helped Muskingum finish in seventh place tallying a 197 two-day total.

In the Ohio Athletic Conference’s preview tournament at River Greens Golf Course, Muskingum earned a top four finish as Miller earned 24th place with an overall score of 190 (88-102).

Tannenhauf Golf Club in Alliance hosted the Mount Union Fall Invitational that resulted in a fifth-place finish for the Muskies where Miller fired an 86 to help pace her team.

Miller competes in the Portage County Amateur each season.

In this year’s 93rd edition, Miller finished in fourth place with rounds of 92-101 at Windmill Lakes Golf Club and Raccoon Hill Golf Club. o

 

CORY GASAWAY, MOGADORE

Gasaway, a former standout golfer for the Mogadore Wildcats is currently in his junior year competing for Walsh University.

Gasaway played in nine events during his freshman year, with a scoring average of 76.95. He earned two top-fives finishes and fired a low round of 2-under-par (70) at the Walsh University Cavaliers Classic.

This season, Walsh opened golf play at the Malone Invitational, where Gasaway fired rounds of 77-78-82.

The most recent tournament for Walsh was the Kyle Ryman Memorial hosted by Tiffin University as the Cavaliers placed eighth overall.

Gasaway carded rounds of 74-76-78 to finish tied for 47th overall.

Gasaway was a four-time member of the All-Portage Trail Conference First Team and qualified for the OHSAA state tournament.

 

GOLF, CHILI AND THE BROWNS

Olde Dutch Mill Golf Course is home to one of the largest Browns’ Backers in the area, the Lake Milton Browns Backers.

The perfect place to enjoy a game of golf, tailgate in the parking lot with other fans and, weather permitting, enjoy a quick game of golf. Olde Dutch Mill is open year-round.

The Browns Backers are hosting the 23rd Chili Cook Off on Nov. 12. All entries must be in by 12:45 p.m., $5 entry fee (bring your own crock pot). Prizes awarded following the Cleveland Browns game.

Fans may also enjoy an endless bowl of chili for $5.
