The Rootstown Rovers hosted the 18th annual Rover Sectional Preview Tournament at Spins Bowl this past weekend, with Division-I teams competing on Saturday and Division-II teams on Sunday.
Although some teams were unable to make it to the tournament this season due to the unfriendly weather that hit Northeast Ohio, the tournament still featured a slate of strong teams, many that may be state bound in the OHSAA postseason tournaments.
In the Division-II tournament on Sunday, the Rootstown Rovers were rude hosts as they swept the tournament titles for both the boys teams and the girls teams.
The Rovers’ girls edged ahead of Fairport Harbor Harding by only 15 pins to take the championship after three regular games and six Baker games, the same format as the upcoming OHSAA Sectional Tournaments.
Leading the charge for the Andy Day-coached Rovers was Maggie Frick, who earned both high game and series honors for the tournament, shooting a 204-592.
The Rootstown B team also performed well on Sunday as the junior varsity girls earned a third-place finish behind the solid bowling of Mal Butcher, who tied Frick for high game with her own 204.
For the champions, Elli Campbell and Payton Curall both earned top-five series medals, with Campbell tossing a 531 and Curall a 519.
The Ravenna Ravens, Southeast Pirates and Crestwood Red Devils also competed in the tournament earning fifth, sixth and seventh place, respectively.
Ravenna’s Zoey Lemasters was the best on the lanes for the Ravens tossing a 169-449. Southeast was led by Lily Seen (146-396) and Crestwood’s best was bowled by Mackenzie Thompson (156-412).
The Rovers distanced themselves from the field in the D-II Boys Division, firing a team total 3,953 to top the Woodridge Bulldogs (3,766).
The Ravenna Raens finished third (3,598), with the Rootstown B team grabbing fifth (2,878) and Crestwood was sixth (2,662).
Fairport Harbor Harding’s Eddie Krafchak earned high game and series honors rolling 268-693, but Rootstown’s Justin Miller earned second-high series (672). Rounding out the top five were Jeria Miller of Ravenna (649), Cameron Kilgore of Tuslaw (645) and Sala Moussa of Woodridge (620).
The Rootstown B team was led by Jonathan Mays (202-498) and the Red Devils’ Kaleb Martin rolled a 192-468.
The 18th Rootstown Rover Sectional Preview Tournament weekend kickekd off on Saturday with teams the Kent Roosevelt boys and girls teams competing against a host of teams from Summit and Mahoning County.
Boardman won the girls division, with Kaitlyn Greenway rolling a 705 high series, which proved to be the best in the entire tournament — boys and girls.
Kent Roosevelt’s Ryleigh Balan tied for fifth-high series, a solid 557.
For the boys, Nordonia was the champion and the winning team’s Josh Ware earned high series, a 670.
Kent, in ninth place, saw Aidan Broyles as the best on the team, bowling a 211-567.
