Par for the Course: Golf careers continue in college for many Portage County standouts

So, what happened to the golfers you loved to read about and follow in high school?

Many of them have continued both their golfing and their education at colleges and universities in Ohio.

Collegiate golf has two seasons — fall and spring. Several tournaments are beginning this weekend and golfers continue to play through early November to cover the fall season.

Then the spring season starts up and often culminates with conference events as well as the regional and national collegiate championships.

Portage Sports will follow many of these golfers through their careers this fall and spring.

Watch for details and profiles on these athletes as season’s progress:

  • Brooklyn Millard of Aurora, a freshman at the University of Toledo
  • Dylan Pendergast of Mogadore, a sophomore at Cleveland State University
  • Cole Hostetler of Rootstown, a sophomore at University of Detroit-Mercy
  • Maddie Kost of Kent, a freshman at Henderson State University
  • Sydnie Leavery of Kent, a junior at LaSalle University
  • Morgan Bauza of Kent, a junior at Niagara University
  • Cory Gasaway of Mogadore, a senior at Walsh University
  • Samantha Clark of Streetsboro, a freshman at Tiffin University

FALL JUNIOR LEAGUE

There is still time to signup for the Fall Junior Golf League at Olde Dutch Mill in Lake Milton.

The league starts today and is recommended for golfers ages 6 to 14. The league includes on-course instruction from U.S. Kids Instructor and Olde Dutch Mill professional Mike Jenior, drills and competitions to hone golfers skills and knowledge, prizes each week, nine holes of golf each week (paired with kids in their own age division) and a season-ending banquet and raffle on Oct. 13.

Parents are encouraged to join their son or daughter as a spectator or caddy each week.

Registration is $150. Call 330-654-4100.

 

HABITEC-TOLEDO OPEN

The 94th Habitec-Toledo Open tees off Monday at Highland Meadows Golf Course in Sylvania.

Hosted by the Northern Ohio PGA, several local golfers are competing in the event including 2011 champion Nathan Tarter of Mogadore.

Competing in the two-day event:

Mitch Camp, Tyler McHugh, Russell Papa and Gary Trivisonno, all of Aurora.

Randy Dietz (alumnus of Kent Roosevelt and Kent State) of Tallmadge.

Steve Parker (alumnus of Kent State).
