Par for the Course: Mogadore graduate Tarter finishes in top 20 at Habitec-Toledo Open

The 94th Habitec-Toledo Open, competed over two days at Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania found several local players golfing in the event.

One of the highest finishes of local golfers was Nathan Tarter, an alumnus of Mogadore High School’s varsity golf team and currently employed at Firestone Country Club in Akron, took home a tie for 15th place after a tough day on the links his second day, carding a 74. Tarter fired a 68 the first day to set himself up for the top-20 finish. Tarter won the Toledo Open in 2017.

Randy Dietz of Tallmadge, and a Kent Roosevelt and Kent State alumnus and current instructor at the Windmill Golf Center in Macedonia, fired a 79 his first day of competition. However, he returned to fire even-par his second day and also land in the top 20.

In the Senior Division, Gary Trivisonno of Aurora earned 12th place (78-75) and Mitch Camp of Aurora 18th place (81-76). Kent State alumnus Steve Parker was 14th after shooting rounds of 75-79.

COLLEGIATE ATHLETES EARNING RESPECT

Each week, Par for the Course will update the successes of Portage County collegiate athletes both on and off the golf course.

Featured this week are Alaina Goldstein, Southeast alumnus; Sydnie Leavery, Kent Roosevelt alumnus and Samantha Miller and Samantha Clark, both Streetsboro alumnus.

ALAINA GOLDSTEIN is beginning her junior year at Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pa., a member of the Presidents Athletic Conference.

Goldstein has earned two letters during her playing time at Westminster, while excelling in the classroom, where she was named to the Dean’s List her sophomore year and was a member of the PAC Spring Academic Honor Roll, and Spring Dean’s List her freshman year.

As a member of the Southeast Pirates, Goldstein competed in both golf and softball. She was two-time All-Conference Player of the Year and was a member of the team that won the Portage Trail Conference championship.

Goldstein is the daughter of Jennifer and Alan Goldstein, has one sibling, Addison, and is the granddaughter of Joe Pinti, assistant girls golf coach at Southeast. Pinti is employed at Olde Dutch Mill, where he is a certified U.S. Kids Golf Coach and assists with the junior programs.

SYDNIE LEAVERY is a junior at LaSalle University (Philadelphia), which is part of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and are members of NCAA Division I.

Leavery, an alumnus of Kent Roosevelt, qualified for OHSAA state championship in 2021 as a member of the Rough Riders. She captained the team for two years and won three varsity letters. Leavery was also a member of the All-Northeast Ohio First Team while at Kent.

At LaSalle, in her most recent tournament, Leavery helped the team to finish in seventh place at the Sacred Hear University Fall Invite. Leavery fired rounds of 86, 87 and 86 in the two-day, 54-hole tournament.

Leavery finished 43 overall.

She has played in every golf event during her career at LaSalle.

She also was named to the Academic Honor Roll. A marketing major with a sales concentration, Leavery aspires working in pharmaceutical sales.

Leavery is the daughter of Troy and Shannon Leavery of Kent. Her sister, Ashlyn, is a senior on the Riders varsity golf team this season.

SAMANTHA MILLER/SAMANTHA CLARK are both alumni of Streetsboro High School and the Rockets’ varsity golf team.

Clark is a freshman at Tiffin University and Miller is a junior at Muskingum, both competing on their respective university golf teams.

Both golfers are competing at the Heidelberg Fall Invite at Fostoria Country Club in Fostoria for the two-day tournament that started Saturday and concludes today.

Clark is the daughter of Scott and Jeri Clark, majoring in Criminal Justice.

Miller is the daughter of Carolyn and Victoria Miller and is an interdisciplinary major.

Miller’s first tournament of the season was at the Mount Union Fall Invitational where she led the Muskies with an 88 at the one-day event at Tannenhauf Golf Club in Alliance. The Muskies finished the event with a score of 363 in fourth place.
