Each week, Par for the Course will update the successes of Portage County collegiate athletes both on and off the golf course.

Featured athletes this week include Mogadore standouts Cory Gasaway and Dillon Pendergast.

Both golfers earned Player of the Year honors playing for the Wildcats in the Portage Trail Conference.

Gasaway continued his golfing career at Walsh University, while Pendergast took his golfing skills to Cleveland State University as both continued their education.

Pendergast is a sophomore at CSU.

In his freshman year, he competed in every tournament, finishing with a 75.5 scoring average.

Pendergast’s best finish was a tie for 21st place at the Tom Tontimonia Invitational, which is hosted by Cleveland State. He finished at 3-under-par during the 54-hole event. Pendergast also finished tied for 34th at the Horizon League Championship.

Gasaway is a senior for the Cavaliers.

His first year set the tone for his collegiate career, as he earned a scoring average of 76.95 and had two top-five finishes in tournaments.

Gasaway fired a low round of 2-under-par at the CAV Classic.

Gasaway and Pendergast are cousins so it was a highlight for their families when they were able to both play in the Cleveland State University Tom Tontimonia Invitational this season.

The conditions were windy at Pine Hills Golf Course in Hinkley for the nine-team event.

Cleveland State finished seventh with a final score of 573 and Walsh was eight strokes behind, putting together a 581.

The event always starts as a 54-hole tournament, but due to weather it was shortened to 36 holes because of rain.

Pendergast finished at 4-over-par for the tournament in a tie for 30th place. He carded two birdies in his final 18 holes.

Gasaway was 10-over for the tournament, concluding his 36-holes in 56th place. He fired a 78 on his first round, but came back strong in his second 18 holes, firing a 72.

As the two continue to help their programs through the season, it will be remembered when they had the opportunity to play in the same tournament hosted by Cleveland State University.
