Olde Dutch Mill was filled with junior golfers last Sunday, when Southeast hosted a middle-school tournament and the regular junior league continued Sunday play.
Almost 60 junior golfers filled the fairways to both learn golf or compete in the five-team tournament.
Champion of the tournament was the middle-school team from Lake (171) followed by Southeast (183), Kent A (188), Champion (200) and Kent B (238).
Medalist of the nine-hole event was Andrew Van Damme of Kent, carding a 39.

Continuing the theme of kids and family at Olde Dutch Mill Golf Course, Jimmy Beers, PGA teaching professional, hosed his first-ever PGA family golf event at the course in Lake Milton. Members of the Northern Ohio PGA Junior League with coach Beers, and their families filled the course for a fun day that included golf and food to conclude the season.
Each week, Par for the Course will update the successes of Portage County collegiate athletes both on and off the golf course. Featured athletes this week include Maddie Kost of Kent, Max Devins of Aurora, Jackson Eichler of Waterloo and Parker Barrett of Aurora.
Kost is a freshman this season on the Henderson State University women’s golf team in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. A state qualifier at Kent Roosevelt as a senior, Kost also was the Northern Ohio PGA’s player of the year in the 16-19 age division and played on the NOPGA’s HAS Cup. Kost was first team all conference both her junior and senior years in the Suburban League.
Maddie has played in several tournaments including at Henderson including the NSU Women’s Golf Classic where the team took fourth place. Kost improved her first-round score by seven strokes to finish with one of the top 20 individual scores of the tournament’s final round.
Competing in the Central Region Fall Preview at Adams Pointe Golf Club in Blue Springs, Missouri, Henderson finished third in the tournament of 17 teams. Kost improved six strokes in the second round over her first posted score.
Next up for Henderson is the tourney at the University of Central Oklahoma event at Kicking Bird Golf Course Oct. 7 and 8.
Both are freshmen at John Carroll University after successful high-school careers, Devins for the Greenmen and Barrett for Walsh Jesuit.
Devins competed at the state tournament as a junior. As a senior, Devins’ coach, Gus Mehallis, always commented on how well the senior was playing. Champion of several Northern Ohio PGA events and always among the best in the Suburban League’s tournaments, Devins is looking forward to competing for the Blue Streaks of John Carroll.
Barrett won the Junior Portage County Amateur this summer prior to his attending John Carroll.
Devins competed in the Gatorade Collegiate at Zoar Village Golf Course for John Carroll as the team finished in fourth place. Devins finished tied for 10th place with rounds of 74 and 73.
Parker Barrett fired rounds of 72 and 79 as an individual, good for a tie for 22nd place.
Next up for the Blue Streaks is the OAC Fall Preview set for Oct. 5 and 6 at River Greens Golf Club in West Lafayette.
Eichlier is currently a freshman at Bluffton University on the men’s golf team.
With Eichler leading Waterloo Vikings in the MVAC league, the Vikings boasted a 9-1 overall record and 7-0 start at the beginning of the season.
In the summer prior to his senior year at Waterloo, Eichler was playing in the NEO Future tour and finished runner-up in the Junior Portage County Amateur.
As a senior he qualified for the DIII District Tournament as an individual.
Now at Bluffton, Eichler competed in the first tournament, the Lou Collins Memorial tournament in Battle Creek, MI as Bluffton finished in ninth place. Eichler finished in 50th place with rounds of 84-90 for a 174.
Next up was the Earlham Forest Hills Invite in Richmond, IN as Bluffton earned 10th place. Eichler carded rounds of 898-94 for a 183, good for 41st place.
Finally at the Guy and Jeanne Kuhn Memorial Invitational in Meadville, PA, Bluffton finished 11th.
Eichler had one of his best efforts in tournament play for Bluffton, carding rounds of 84-82 for a 166 and a tie for 42nd place.
Next up is this weekend’s MSJ Stateline Shootout in Harrison.
Saturday’s round was rained out, reverting the event to a one-round tournament today.
