Streetsboro produced three individual champions in the Metro Athletic Conference Tournament on Feb. 15 at Woodridge: Anthony Sindelar in the 126-pound weight class, Justin Wargo at 132 and Cohen Klimak at 165.
“Anthony won by pin in the championship match over an opponent from Springfield. He had a great day,” head coach Mark Skonieczny said. “It was his first action since the Hudson Tournament in week two when he popped his shoulder. We were not expecting him to make it back, but he’s a tough kid. He’s going to give it a shot here at the end of the season. He was one of the very few guys who actually wrestled three matches, and he had all pins.
“Justin won by tech fall in the championship match over an opponent from Norton. This was the first time he won the MAC Tournament. He went in undefeated in the conference. We were expecting him to win it, and he didn’t let us down. He dominated, he looked fantastic.
“Cohen won in the championship match by pin over a Coventry opponent. He did what was expected. He’s a beast. He also won by pin in the semifinals. On top of that, he was voted the MAC Wrestler of the Year.”
Overall, the Rockets finished third out of eight teams with 131.5 points. Woodridge won the title with 149 points and Norton was second with 140.5 points.
“My team performance wasn’t bad,” said Skonieczny. “We’ve had better tournaments, we’ve had worse tournaments.”
Johnny Bollinger (106) and Matthew Klimak (Cohen’s cousin, 120) both lost by pin in their respective championship matches — Bollinger to a Coventry opponent and Klimak to a Woodridge foe.
“Johnny was actually winning 5-0 in the second period but got caught,” said the coach. “Matthew wrestled very well. He’s a tough kid. He went right after his opponent, took him down, put him to his back, also went up 5-0, turned him again, went up 7-0 and tried to step over and go for the pin but got into a scramble.”
Jerry Benci finished third at 150 and Mason Giambrone took fourth at 138.
Streetsboro will go to St. Vincent St. Mary on Saturday for the Division II sectional tournament. Action is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
