STREETSBORO

Streetsboro won in dominant fashion in a tri-meet Feb. 4 over host Springfield and Coventry. The Rockets defeated the Spartans 60-15 and beat the Comets 60-17.

“We really looked fantastic,” head coach Mark Skonieczny said. “I think we’re getting to a point now where we’re starting to hit our high notes, and we’re starting to peak and we’re starting to get healthy.”

Seniors Cohen Klimak in the 167-pound weight class and cousin Matt Klimak at 120 each pinned both of their opponents. Sophomore Gerry Benci won both matches, too — by pin over his Coventry opponent and by major decision over his Springfield foe.

“Cohen is a dedicated young man to the sport. He works hard and attacks. He doesn’t fear anybody. He goes after everybody,” Skonieczny said. “Matt is coming back from an illness. He was out a couple weeks and also hurt his ankle. He’s starting to catch fire. He was underweight, weighed in at about 117 pounds, but he was aggressive and on the attack. He looked fantastic. Gerry was tough, is in great shape. He’s kind of a bulldog wrestler, is constantly attacking and pounding on the body. He never stops wrestling.”

Next up for Streetsboro: Metro Athletic Conference Tournament at Woodridge Feb. 15 at 9 a.m.

CRESTWOOD

Crestwood won at Kenston on Jan. 30 in a tight match.

“It was real close heading into the upper weights, where Kenston had some forfeits,” head coach Dave Wrobel said. “Overall, we had a couple nice wins.”

The Red Devils had three individual winners — sophomores Nick Lukart in the 138-pound weight class and Ty Berquist at 157 producing pins and Rocco Wrobel at 113 by a score of 10-2.

“Nick went out there and got a first-period pin, getting a nice win for us that put us in front,” said the elder Wrobel. “It was nice because it was someone different who stepped up. He did a good job. Ty started off a bit sluggish. He didn’t really score points the way we’re accustomed to him scoring, but he ended up putting it together. Rocco dominated a good opponent who he wrestled a couple weeks earlier in a really close match. Rocco looked sharp on his feet and ended up getting three takedowns and an escape.”

Next up for Crestwood: Tri-meet against host Trinity and West Salem Northwestern Feb. 6 at 6 p.m.; at Hudson Feb. 12 at 6 p.m.

GARFIELD

The lowerclassmen led the way for Garfield in the G-Mens’ close win Jan. 29 at Burton Berkshire.

“We won the matches we needed to,” head coach Dan Andel said, “enough to overcome the four weight classes we were missing.”

Sophomores Landon Andel in the 138-pound weight class, Keaton Ellison at 150 and Luke Kaufman at 126 plus freshman Ryder Cain at 165 were victorious and did well.

“Keaton’s match was the pivotal one,” said the elder Andel.

Next up for Garfield: Quad meet against Southeast, Brookfield and South Range on Feb. 6; Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Tournament at Columbiana Crestview on Feb. 8.

KENT ROOSEVELT

Kent Roosevelt took advantage of a down season for Ravenna and won easily on the road Feb. 1.

“We only had four matches, but in those matches the kids showed up and wrestled well,” head coach Chris Dunfee said.

Two wrestlers who had solid wins were senior Jeremiah Brumfield in the 132-pound weight division and freshman Dominic Dozanti at 190.

“Jeremiah wrestled against Ryder Denning. They wrestled last year in a really close match,” said Dunfee. “Jeremiah really was up for the match. He wrestled really well and ended up winning by technical fall. I was really happy with the way Dominic wrestled. The first period was a close match, the second period he was able to lock up a cradle and was able to win by pin. It was a real exciting match for Dom in an exciting environment.”

Next up for Kent Roosevelt: Super quad match against host Hoban, Walsh Jesuit, St. Vincent-St. Mary and Tri-Valley Feb. 8.

SOUTHEAST

Southeast was not up to par Jan. 29 in a loss at Liberty.

“It was probably the worst we’ve wrestled all season,” head coach Shane Kuberry said. “We lost three or four one-point matches, which really would’ve swung things in our favor had we turned a couple of those around.”

Three wrestlers who did well in winning their matches were Braylon Reshonsky in the 113-pound weight class, Cameron Dye at 120 and Dominic Kemble at 126.

It was a different story the next day on Jan. 30 as the Pirates defeated both host Grand Valley and Pymatuning Valley in a tri-meet.

“In 24 hours we turned everything around,” said Kuberry. “We looked way better in both matches than we did at Liberty. We had lots of good performances from a bunch of kids.”

Dye (120), Reshonsky (113) and Trey Follen (132) led the charge.

Two days later, on Feb. 1 in the State Duals at Waynedale, Southeast jumped out to 24-0 leads against both South Range and Mogadore but lost both.

“We had some kids who wrestled really, really well that day,” the coach said, “but had some kids who didn’t.”

Next up for Southeast: Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Championships at Columbiana Crestview Feb. 8 at 9 a.m.

MOGADORE

Mogadore won easily at Waterloo on Jan. 29. The Wildcats were led by the upperclassmen.

“They took care of business,” head coach Duane Funk said. “The kids wrestled well. It was a good night.”

One upperclassman who did well and won was senior Owen Roberts in the 138-pound weight class.

Three days later, on Feb. 1, Mogadore lost badly to host Waynedale in the State Duals.

The team’s only winner was junior Dylan Benedum at 215.

“Dylan wrestled really well,” said Funk. “He wasn’t feeling well and is still giving up way too much weight, but he did well in technique and had a nice takedown to win by points.”

Then, even with four forfeits, the Wildcats defeated Southeast 46-36.

Senior Kasey Pruitt (138) and Blake Hershberger (144) won key matches.

“Both were matches that could’ve gone either way,” Funk said.

Next up for Mogadore: Battle for the Fence tri-meet at home against Springfield and Ellet. Feb. 6 at 6 p.m.

RAVENNA

Freshman Isaac Thompson in the 132-pound weight division was Ravenna’s only winner in a home loss to Kent Roosevelt Feb. 1.

“Isaac was down in the first period,” head coach Eric Kline said. “The Kent Roosevelt wrestler went to go hit a cradle, and Isaac countered the cradle and was able to pin him. It was a good, hard-fought battle. As a freshman, you’re learning a lot. It’s a lot to be a starter as a freshman, but Isaac stepped up and wrestled a big match for us.”

Next up for Ravenna: Metro Athletic Conference Tournament at Woodridge Feb. 15 at 9 a.m.

MOGADORE GIRLS

Junior Mackenzie Shellenbarger in the 170-pound weight class and freshman Laila Funk at 110 both pinned their Waterloo opponents Jan. 29 in a road win for Mogadore.

Next up for Mogadore: Carrollton High School Girls Tournament Feb. 15 at 10 a.m.
