High School Roundup (Sept. 10): Waterloo volleyball wins over Mathews in five games

WATERLOO DEF. MATHEWS,

25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 26-28, 15-9

The Vikings scored a five-game home victory, in thrilling fashion, on Saturday.

The tiebreaker difference of six points was the most of any game differential for the day, with games one, two and four all decided by two points.

Waterloo was led by Isabella Kozma’s 12 points, four aces and nine kills.

Miranda Long had 15 assists for the Vikings, who are now 3-5 overall and 1-5 in league play.

Alayna Holmes added nine points and Sophia Gonzales added six points for the Vikings.

 

CHIPPEWA DEF. SOUTHEAST,

25-11, 25-15, 25-11

Southeast failed to keep up with Chippewa in a three-game loss on Saturday.

Norah Truex had four kills and 10 digs, while Kayla Grope also had four kills.

Lilly Massrock led the Pirates with her six assists, while Emma Janok and Kylie Bailey each finished with nine digs each.

 

BOYS SOCCER

CRESTWOOD 7, TUSLAW 0

The Red Devils’ defense earned the shutout victory on Saturday and the offense was led by Jayden Julian’s four goals.

Julian, a senior, also had a pair of assists.

Sophomore Elijah Jurisch also had a multi-goal game, putting a pair of shots into the back of the net. Jurisch also had three assists for a solid all-around game.

The Devils’ seventh goal of the game was scored by Kenny Stoots, while Gavin Dunfee also had an assist for Crestwood.

 

SMITHVILLE 4, ROOTSTOWN 1

The Smithies scored two goals in each half and the Rovers could not keep up with that pace in a non-league loss on Saturday.

Rootstown’s Nathan Pastor scored the team’s only goal on a shot that was assisted by Simon Halaszi.

 

GIRLS SOCCER

WATERLOO 4, UNITED 1

The Vikings jumped out to a 3-0 lead by halftime and then added another goal in the second half to score another victory.

Kaira English scored the first of her two goals in the game in the first half, with Henry and Bailey English each also scoring in the opening play.

Kaira English added a second goal in the second half.
