It’s tournament time in Ohio for all golfers as they begin OHSAA postseason sectional tournament action this week.
There is much anticipation among Portage County teams to continue the success they have had in conference tournament action.
As the Portage Trail Conference, the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference and the Metro Athletic Conference all concluded their regular seasons this week, Portage County teams were among the best in each conference.
Conference tournaments are conclude this week for Division-I teams Kent Roosevelt and Aurora as the Suburban wraps up the girls and boys seasons.
As Coach Matt Just offered, the Rovers’ girls team competed in the PTC at Sable Creek and brought home some hardware.
At Sable Creek, the Rovers fired a new team record low, a 402, beating their previous 18-hole score by 15 strokes.
Leading the way for the Rovers and earning medalist honors was freshman Morgan Giebel, firing a 98. She was followed closely by runner-up Chloe Gardner (100) and junior Anna Drago (100).
Drago earned First Team All-PTC honors, Ava Miller and Alex Biggin earned a spot on the Second Team and Chloe Gardner was an Honorable Mention selection.
“I am proud of all of the Lady Rovers,” said Just.
Both of the Southeast Pirates teams, girls and boys, had something to brag about in their conference tournaments at Salem Hills Golf Club.
The girls won their fourth straight conference title across two conferences.
The boys finished in second place among all of the teams in both the Gray and the Scarlet divisions, which includes 16 teams.
Taylor Blazek, a senior for the Pirates’ girls team and James Morgan, a junior for the Pirates’ boys team, were individual medalists — an honor they earned in 2023 as well in the Portage Trail Conference.
But the two teams didn’t stop there.
Cole Bruno, a sophomore, was the runner-up medalist for the boys teams and freshmen Sammy Morgan and Jenni Mix finished second and third, respectively, in the tournament.
Waterloo’s Trevor Simons was the medalist in the Scarlet Division.
The Streetsboro Rockets boys and girls teams did well as both teams finished in the runner-up spot at their conference tournaments.
For the girls, they jumped two spots from their finish in the fall preseason tournament, a fact that was accomplished by hard work throughout the season.
The boys team’s runner-up spot combined with the season and the preseason tournament allowed the Rockets to earn their first conference championship.
