High School Golf Report: Roosevelt girls win historic 150th match

The Kent Roosevelt girls earned their 150th win as a program and successfully completed a victorious week with wins over Green, Solon, Tallmadge and Kenston.

The competition against Green was a match play event as Kent earned 8.5 points to Green’s half of a point.

Ashlyn Leavery, Ella Houk, Cassidy Singer, Coco Golden and Brooke Beatty each finished the match play 2-0 — as Adrianna Mineo scored one victory and one tie.

Leavery, senior, earned medalist honors against Solon at Grantwood Golf Course (38); at Fairways at Twin Lakes against Tallmadge (37); and Adrianna Mineo fired a 39 against Kenston at Punderson Golf Course.

“The team is now 5-1 on the season,” said Bryan Harvey, varsity girls coach.

The Roosevelt girls are continuing their tradition of excellence. Its next match is at home on Tuesday.

The Riders’ girls team scores his week included:

Roosevelt 167 vs. Solon 191: Ashlyn Leavery 38, Cassidy Singer 42, Adrianna Mineo 41, Coco Golden 48, Ella Houk 46, Brooke Beatty 51.

Roosevelt 171 vs. Tallmadge 205: Ashlyn Leavery 37 Cassidy Singer 50, Adrianna Mineo 44, Coco Golden 52, Ella Houk 45, Brooke Beatty 45.

Roosevelt 167 vs. Kenston 197: Ashlyn Leavery 40, Cassidy Siger 41, Adrianna Mineo 39, Coco Golden 47, Ella Houk 48, Brooke Beatty 51.

Nathan Kinter of Rootstown qualified for the regional qualifier at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky., by earning second place at Westfield Country Club sub-regional qualifier.

Kinter is a golfer on the Southeast Middle School team and now has to make it through the regional qualifier to advance to Augusta National Golf Club, home to The Masters.

KENT JUNIOR TOURNAMENT

Raccoon Hill Golf Club was filled with junior golfers during the annual Riders Junior Golf Tournament, giving juniors a chance to continue to improve and while building toward competing on their high school golf teams.

In the Riders Junior Golf Tournament, the girls division was won by Audrey Goebelt of Lake as Mia Pipoly and Colbie Kruger of Kent tied for second.

For the boys, Blake Walchalk of Lake finished first, Michael Caza of Highland in second and won closest to the pin on the back and Sawyer Hrabak of Highland finished in third place and won closest to the pin on the front.

The tournament raised nearly $300 for The Rose Fund, a charity through Kelly’s Grief center that provides services to parents who have lost a child offered Ashley Shaheen, tournament director. The money was earned through donations and he closest to the pin competition.

AURORA GIRLS WIN QUAD MATCH

Aurora girls golf team traveled to Westfield Country Club to compete in a quad match against Revere, St. Vincent-St. Mary and Archbishop Hoban.

Aurora won the match, topping Revere by four strokes and besting both St. Vincent-St. Mary and Hoban. Gracyn Vidovic of Aurora was the match medalist, carding an outstanding 73, just 1-over-par, on the tough fairways of Westfield Country Club.

Aurora’s scoring included Meena Kraus (91), Courtney Zeid (103), Bennett Deluca (94) and Kelly MacSurak (99).

JAMES MORGAN

James Morgan, a Southeast Pirate junior, continues to demonstrate he is one of the best players in the MVAC.

Competing against Champion at Olde Dutch Mill, Morgan helped the Pirates defeat Champion, a team that had previously handed Southeast their only loss in the MVAC.

Morgan fired a 1-under-par 35, one of many matches this season that has been under par, as the Pirates topped Champion 165 to 189.

Southeast is now 5-1 in the MVAC.
