Liam Curtis of Kent, competing for the Rough Riders, has been having a memorable start to his season.

Curtis was the tournament medalist in both of the Suburban League Conference tournaments (with two additional tourney events still scheduled).

The Roosevelt Rough Riders recently competed at Walsh Jesuit’s Invitational at Brookledge Golf Course in Cuyahoga Falls.

Curtis fired an outstanding 5-under-par to, again, earn medalist honors and the team scored their low 18-hole score of the season, a 318.

RIDERS JUNIOR GOLF TOURNAMENT

Building a golf program starts with getting clubs in the hands of elementary and middle-school golfers.

Kent’s Stanton Middle School is hosting the Riders Junior Golf Tournament at Raccoon Hill Golf Club on Aug. 25 in Kent.

The tournament welcomes sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade individual boys and girls from any school to register for the 18-hole tournament.

Awards are presented in both boys and girls divisions.

Registration is $50 per athlete and includes 18 holes walking, hot-dog lunch at the turn and two closest to the pen opportunities. Winners of the closest to the pin receive a $25 gift card to Dunkin’ Donuts.

All proceeds from the tournament are donated directly to The Rose Fund, a charity fund through Kelly’s Grief Center that provides free services to parents who have lost a child. Donations to the charity will also be accepted by ash, check or Venmo on the day of the event.

ANOTHER MATCH, ANOTHER RECORD

The Rootstown Rovers’ girls varsity golf team is in its third year as a program.

Sometimes, a young team will struggle to find their swings, however, the Rovers are, instead, setting new team and individual records every time they step on the course recently.

Most recently, senior Alex Biggin set her own personal best score, a 44 for nine holes, in a match against Hudson at Sunny Hill Golf Course. Biggin’s score helped the team set a new record, a 181 as a team for nine holes.

That broke the record of 187 shot earlier in the season against Minerva.

Each of the girls, Ava Miller, Chloe Gardner, Morgan Giebel and Ella Derr, have shot personal bests this season.
