Friday marks the final night of the regular season.
Senior Nights, championship dreams, playoff berths.
And, in some cases, good byes.
Maybe in even more cases, tears.
Sixteen teams in each region will qualify for the postseason, but for those that do not, Friday night will close out the 2022 season. The final night for players, staffs, cheerleaders, band members, dance lines, majorettes, parents and fans.
If you are an underclassmen, congratulations on a nice season and good luck in your winter and spring sports, then your off-season prep for fall 2023.
If you are a senior, congratulations on four years of dedication and determination.
It won’t be easy to say good bye to your teammates, coaches and the sport. Just remember everything the sport gave to you. Friendships, memories, discipline, character.
For those that have earned a Week 11, good luck!
Scenarios for area teams looking to capture league titles tonight.
• MOGADORE — The Wildcats are champions already. The details are simply in whether or not they will win the Portage Trail Conference outright or share it with the Rootstown Rovers. The league championship is the program’s 44th all-time. Mogadore hosts Rootstown on Friday. The Wildcats have won 44 league titles.
• ROOTSTOWN — The Rovers have some work to day and it won’t be easy, but they have played themselves into an opportunity. Rootstown will need to win on Friday night at Mogadore to force a share of the PTC championship. The Rovers have won 10 league titles.
• GARFIELD — The G-Men have to take care of their business, then hope for a little bit of help. With last week’s loss to Brookfield, the G-Men are now one game behind the Warriors in the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Grey Division standings. Garfield hosts Liberty (4-4) and will need to win, then hope that Champion (3-6) can upset Brookfield. In that scenario, the G-Men and Warriors will be co-champions of the MVAC.
It would be hard to script a more beautiful night for Week 10 of the season.
At kickoff, 58 degrees with no rain.
The temperature will continue to hover in the mid-50’s even through the fourth quarter.
