Imagine being the only school that sponsors a sport in all of Portage County.
That is the story of the Kent Roosevelt High School boys volleyball program.
Competing in Division II, the team, coached by Mikayla Pritts, plays a full schedule.
To date, the Rough Riders have played in three matches, posting a 2-1 record, with sweeps of Villa Angela-St. Joseph (25-17, 25-23, 25-21) and Cuyahoga Falls (25-12, 25-21, 25-15), with the team’s lone loss coming to Firestone (16-25, 25-23, 21-25, 23-25).
“Our goals this year as a team is to finish above .500 and progress to the regional finals,” said Pritts.
The team is well on their way, having won two of their three matches.
Pritts has coached the team for 10 years and is assisted by Jeff Thompson.
Coming off a 10-12 record in 2024, the team is led by senior Ryan Slocum on his way to earning four varsity letters by the end of this season.
Additional returning lettermen include:
“Senior Cole Christy is a defensive specialist and senior Larenzo Smith is taking over as middle hitter,” concluded Pritts.
