ROOSEVELT’S CURTIS ADVANCES TO DISTRICT

Liam Curtis, a senior at Kent Roosevelt and Kent State University men’s golf commit, fired a 3-over 75 to advance to the OHSAA’s Division I Pine Hills District.

Curtis was consistent throughout the day at Tannenhauf, firing six bogeys and three birdies, including a 1-under-par on the final hole on his way to that 3-over-par 75.

Curtis grabbed the first-qualifying spot and was the third-best score in the sectional.

Kent Roosevelt just missed qualifying as a team for the Division I district at Pine Hills, finishing in fifth place — just 12 strokes behind Uniontown Green for the fourth-qualifying spot.

Deacon Smith, a junior for the Rough Riders, fired the runner-up best score for the team, an 86.

The Pine Hills District is scheduled for Oct. 7 at Pine Hills Golf Club in Hinckley.

On Thursday, Curtis had another strong day.

Playing in the fourth Suburban League Tournament, the Riders’ standout shot a 69 to earn medalist honors at Good Park Golf Course in Akron.

The 69 was the lowest score by four strokes, as Roosevelt took runner-up honors in the American Conference’s final tournament of the fall. Curtis has been in the top-three scorers in all four tournaments.

Helping Roosevelt’s efforts to the final score of 310, just four shots shy of winner Revere, was freshman Jax Turner, scoring a 5-over-par 77.

Aurora finished in fifth place (326). Gannon Brady carded the low score for the Greenmen, a 79, and Jackson Sarver added an 81.

The overall championship team for the Suburban League, as well as individual honors, are announced separately after the conclusion of all four tournaments.

JACOB RAINIERI QUALIFIES FOR DISTRICT

Mogadore resident Jacob Rainieri, who plays for Lake Center Christian, qualified as an individual for the Division III district tournament, firing a 3-over-par 75 at Salem Hills on Thursday to finish in the top three golfers not on qualifying teams.

Rainieri’s 75 tied him for third place as an individual in the tournament.

The Wildcats just missed qualifying among the top-three teams by three strokes.

The Wildcats were led by brothers Brock Thiry and Jude Thiry. Brock, a freshman, carded an 83 and Jude navigated the fairways to an 85. Tyler Pendergast and Max Shannon added a pair of 86s.

Rainieri now advances to the Tannenhauf Division III District at Tannenhauf Golf Club in Alliance.
