The 2023 Streetsboro boys golf team took a step forward in the Metro Athletic Conference and gave head coach Bruce Thomas a feeling that 2024 could be something special.

Thomas’ feeling proved to be true.

After finishing in third place of the MAC last year with a 10-4 record, the Rockets welcomed back significant talent to the 2024 roster, as well as some incoming underclassmen.

The team recognized an opportunity to compete for a title could emerge, put in the hard work required to match that opportunity and felt the joy of making history as the first boys golf team in school history to win the league championship.

“It was a long time coming and the players put in a lot of hard work to accomplish it,” Streetsboro boys golf head coach Bruce Thomas said. “The first-ever league championship just reinforced that the things we have been doing the last few years were correct and with the players’ dedication, we were able to accomplish our goal.”

Thomas pointed to his senior leadership delivered to the team from Zach Schramm, Jayden Singleton and Andrew Burton as a significant key to the group’s overall success.

“They were great leaders,” said Thomas, who was named the MAC Coach of the Year in his 22nd season leading the program. “Every single golfer bought into what we were trying to accomplish. We had a rotation of seven, with the three seniors leading the way.”

The Rockets’ rotation also included juniors Brett Epple, Bryce Pocek and Evan Reger, along with sophomore Dom Marcini.

“They supported each other, even if they were not playing in the match,” Thomas said of his group of seven.

That support and camaraderie, along with the the team’s hard work pay off with success on the course, made for a memorable season, according to Thomas.

“This has been a very enjoyable season and not just because of the title, but because of the great bunch of young people we had playing this year,” Thomas said. “They love being around each other, they love the game of golf, they worked extremely hard and they improved every day. With the returning golfers and the newcomers from the JV team, we have a great chance to repeat as league champs next year.”
