Saturday’s finals at the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s state championships turned into a special day for Garfield’s Conner Hunt and Streetsboro’s Milena Sobie.
Hunt won the state championships in the Seated Division in the 100, 400 and 800.
Sobie, a senior, won the state championships in the Seated Division in the 100 and 800. She also placed third in the shot put and second in the 400.
Hunt, a sophomore, won the 100 meters in a time of 17.43, nearly six seconds faster than the runner-up. The Garfield sophomore set a state record earlier this season with his time of 16.13 in the event.
In the 400 meters, Hunt won by 29 seconds and clocked a 1:01.70.
Hunt’s domination continued in the 800 meters, which he finished in 2:10.78, ahead of the runner-up’s time of 3:10.66.
Sobie’s championship in the 100 meters was a very close race. She finished in 23.48, edging out runner-up Esther-Faith Henn (Grove City), who finished in 23.81.
Southeast graduate Jenna Fesemyer, who was in attendance for Saturday’s final, still holds the state-meet record for the event, which is 20.51 and was set in 2015.
Sobie’s 800-meter state championship was completed in 3:11.06. Once again, she finished ahead of Henn, who was second in a time of 3:20.67.
Sobie’s third-place shot put throw was measured at 18 feet, 0.5 inches. Her 400 meters runner-up time was 1:27.70. Just shy of Henn’s winning time of 1:26.86.
