For 19 bowling seasons, the Rootstown Rovers have hosted a high school bowling tournament at Spins Bowl in Kent that follows the format of the upcoming OHSAA sectional tournaments.
This season saw more than 55 teams in two days compete with Division-I teams on Saturday and Division-II teams on Sunday.
The Rovers’ girls welcomed teams to the tournament by earning the team championship, as well as taking home high game and second-high series.
In fact, the Rover had two teams in the tournament and took second and fourth place — an outstanding showing for the team that has already notched several tournament championships this season.
Emma Day earned high-game honors (226) and fired a 602 series to miss the best series among the girls by only one pin. Madison Lint of East Canton fired a 603.
The Rovers’ boys took home runner-up honors, falling just behind.
Rootstown were led by Jason Miller, who earned second-high series (712) as Lutheran West’s Zah Smeal fired a 771.
The Division-II tournament was held on Sunday.
On Saturday, 32 teams filled Spins Bowl to watch the Boardman boys and the Fairport Harbor Harding girls take home the winning trophies.
Highlight of the Division-I tournament was Jillian Justinger of Fairport Harbor firing a 299 game. Everyone watching in the lanes thought she had the 300 game as her final strike was buried in the pocket.
Teams are now looking forward to completing their seasons and competing well at conference tournaments before the OHSAA’s sectionals begin in February leading to the state tournament in March.
