The 85th Good Park Junior Tournament at the city course in Akron welcomed youth golfers to the first of three days and the qualifying day on Tuesday.
Portage County golfers demonstrated they are a force to be reckoned with during the qualifying round.
Taylor Blazek and James Morgan, both golfers for Southeast High School and reigning Players of the Year in the Portage Trail Conference, qualified for the championship flight, as well as Samantha Morgan, making it a family affair for the Morgan family.
Blazek, a senior this upcoming fall golf season, leads all golfers in the tournament, carding a 77 on Tuesday and giving herself a two-stroke lead over Caitrin Coyle of St. Vincent-St. Mary.
Joining Blazek in the championship flight is Samantha Morgan, a freshman on the Pirates’ team this fall, firing an 83 on the Par-71 fairways.
James Morgan qualified for the 10-golfer championship flight, shooting a 78. Morgan is only five strokes shy of the leader, Zach Butcher of Medina Highland (73).
Kent Roosevelt golfer, Jackson Turner, carded an 80 and is in a tie for the top of the First Flight for the boys.
Local golfers qualifying for the first flight for the girls are members of the Southeast team: Jennifer Mix (95), Jessica Mix (96), Aubree Varga (97) and Adriana Sloan (103).
No spectators are permitted on Good Park Golf Course during the junior tournament. Tee times for the second day of the tournament begin at 8:25 a.m. for the boys championship flight and 8:45 a.m. for the girls championship flight.
