The Garfield G-Men dominated early, then cruised to a convincing 40-7 road victory over Newton Falls on Friday.
Garfield, which is now 4-1 overall, led 26-0 after the first quarter and 40-0 by halftime.
In the first two quarters of play, the G-Men had churned out 300 yards of total offense, while holding the Tigers to only 47 yards.
“It was a great team effort tonight,” Garfield head coach Mike Moser said. “Our kids were focused and ready to play. I’m really proud of ho hard our kids continue to work and prepare every week — and continue to improve.”
Garfield’s first quarter touchdowns were scored by Jesse Grace and Keegan Sell, with three coming offensively and one defensively.
Grace got the G-Men on the board with a 3-yard run that was capped by an extra point from Ethan Bittence at 6:49 in the first quarter.
Grace then ran in from 19 yards out at 4:14, with another Bittence extra point for a 14-0 Garfield lead with only 28 seconds remaining.
Next up was Sell, who plunged in from 1 yard and on Newton Falls’ ensuring possession Sell picked off a Tigers pass and raced it in for another touchdown just 10 seconds after he had scored on the ground.
Garfield’s second-quarter touchdowns were scored by Deacon Sommer (60-yard run) and Sell collecting his third of the game on another 1-yard run.
For the game, Sell ran for 88 yards on only six attempts, which highlighted nine different G-Men having at least one rushing attempt in the game.
Sommer totaled 68 yards on his two carries, while Jesse Grace (60 yards, 6 carries), Harper Troyer (51 yards, 6 carries) and Eric Geddes (28 yards, 4 carries) rounded out the top rushers for Garfield.
